Max Dowman's Future at Arsenal: January Loan Considerations
Mikel Arteta is weighing up a January loan move for teenage sensation Max Dowman, even as excitement around the youngster continues to surge among Arsenal fans.
Dowman, just 16, has been one of the standout stories of Arsenal’s academy in recent years. The England Under-19 international has climbed through the club’s youth ranks to force his way into the first-team squad, and he already owns a slice of Premier League history after becoming the youngest scorer the competition – and Arsenal – has ever seen last season.
He has three goals and one assist from 14 senior appearances in all competitions, a modest tally on paper but one built almost entirely from cameo roles and cup minutes. His latest audition came on Tuesday night, when he struck twice in a 4-2 League Cup win over Ipswich Town, a performance that only cranked up calls from the Emirates stands for more of him, not less.
Yet the reality of life at a title-chasing club is harsher than the romance.
Arteta’s six-month rule
Arteta, speaking to BBC Sport, made it clear that Dowman’s future will be assessed with cold clarity rather than emotion.
“We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision,” he said. “It depends on a lot of factors.
“What he needs, and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes.
“We have to be open, but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team.”
For all the noise, Dowman has yet to play a single Premier League minute this season for the reigning champions. That gap between his potential and his current role is exactly where the loan debate lives.
Arteta revealed that Arsenal shut the door on any summer approaches because they wanted to keep Dowman close in the short term.
“We haven’t really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have Max in the squad, that we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there,” he explained.
Lessons from Paris
Arteta knows the crossroads facing Dowman. He lived it.
“There have been many cases of that age when they have gone out and been successful and others not,” he said. “In my particular case, I was 17 when I went to Paris [St-Germain].
“It depends on the atmosphere that you find there, and how much the coach believes in you as to whether you go there just to be part of a squad or play minutes.
“Which country, it depends.
“But now he is in a good place, let’s keep him here.”
That last line will encourage those desperate to see more of Dowman in red and white. At the same time, the repeated references to “being open” leave the door firmly ajar for a January move if his opportunities remain limited.
Knocking on the door
The next immediate test is Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday. Asked whether Dowman could feature, Arteta laid out the only argument that really counts.
“The best way to knock on the door is to do it on the pitch, not in the office,” he said. “Then you just leave out the arguments.
“When a player delivers constantly on the pitch, every single day in training, that’s the best way, that’s the best signal for the manager.
“That’s the best signal for his teammates, too.
“And what Max did the other day, alongside all the other players as well that haven’t played many minutes this season, was really impressive.”
For now, Dowman sits in that fragile space between prodigy and regular. Arsenal believe they have a gem. The question over the next few months is simple: will his polishing happen under the lights of the Emirates, or somewhere else in January?
