Maresca Confirms Fernandez Left Out of Man City Captaincy Group

Enzo Fernandez has arrived at Manchester City as a £125m statement signing. He will not, however, arrive as a leader.

Just days after sealing his deadline-day move from Chelsea and declaring he had "always dreamed of being at a club as big as Man City", the 2022 World Cup winner has been handed a sharp early reality check. Enzo may be the new star in the dressing room, but the armband is off limits.

Asked directly whether his blockbuster recruit would be fast-tracked into a leadership role, City head coach Enzo Maresca didn’t dance around the issue.

"No, the captain is Ruben [Dias], Erling [Haaland], Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma," he told reporters at his Friday press conference ahead of the Premier League clash with Coventry City.

Four names. None of them Enzo Fernandez.

New era, new hierarchy

The decision underlines how quickly the landscape has shifted at the Etihad. Rodri and Bernardo Silva have gone, taking with them two pillars of the Pep Guardiola era and leaving Maresca to redraw the leadership map.

Ruben Dias and Erling Haaland keep the thread of continuity, standard-bearers for the relentless standards City set under Guardiola. Around them, Maresca has moved decisively. Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma – relative newcomers in City terms – have been elevated as part of a new-look core.

It’s a clear message: reputation and transfer fee do not buy you a place in the inner circle. Not here.

Fernandez snub carries extra sting

For Fernandez, the omission bites a little harder given his recent past. At Chelsea, he was no stranger to responsibility. Across three years at Stamford Bridge, the Argentine wore the armband 57 times, including 43 matches under Maresca himself.

The coach knows exactly what kind of presence he can be in a dressing room. That history only makes this call more pointed. Maresca has worked with Fernandez as captain before – and still chose to draw a line.

For now, at least, Enzo is here to follow, not to lead.

Dressing room welcomes a “winner”

What Maresca has not done is dampen the excitement around his arrival. Inside the camp, the mood is very different to the cool public stance on captaincy.

"He is a winner and when you belong to a squad and another winning player arrives, they are always happy," Maresca said, underlining the reaction within the group. He revealed that in the last four or five days, "four or five players from the squad were asking if he is coming or not because they want him to be with us."

That kind of anticipation tells its own story. City’s players have pushed for this deal, and the manager knows the value of adding another serial competitor to a squad already stacked with them.

"It's very important that he is with us and we are 100 per cent happy with that," Maresca added.

So Fernandez walks into a dressing room that wanted him, into a club he has long admired, but without the official status he enjoyed in London. The hierarchy is set. The captain’s group is closed.

What happens next is simple: if Enzo wants a voice at Manchester City, he will have to earn it all over again.
