Manchester United Women Prepare for League Cup Clash Against Sheffield United
Manchester United Women head into their League Cup tie against Sheffield United on Tuesday night carrying scars, but also a flicker of momentum.
The start to the season has been rough. A damaging defeat to London City, followed by a brutal 0-5 hammering at the hands of Chelsea, left questions hanging over the squad. Then came Arsenal on Saturday – and with it, a response. United dug in, produced a far sharper display and earned a point that at least steadied the mood.
Now comes the cup, and with it, a chance to reset.
Awujo’s rise and a Spanish connection
One of the bright spots in the early turbulence has been Canadian midfielder Simi Awujo. She scored her first league goal in the loss to London City, a personal milestone that cut through the disappointment of the result. The Sheffield United clash offers another opportunity for minutes and influence.
Speaking to the club’s website ahead of the game, Awujo opened up about an unexpected asset she brings to the dressing room: her Spanish.
Raised in Georgia, she learned Spanish as a child and has used it to help knit together a multilingual squad.
“Yeah, Medi's (Andrea Medina) quite out there,” she said. “I think it seemed quite easy for her to just mesh with everyone because she's just a good personality – lots of fun! But yeah, I do speak Spanish. I would say I'm proficient, I wouldn't say fully fluent just because I've never lived there or anything.”
That ability has already become a bridge inside the team.
“But I can have conversations with Medi and Rebe (Rebeca Bernal) as well now, in Spanish,” she added.
Her interest began in school, then deepened through watching TV and picking up the language from there. It is a small detail, but one that speaks to a player eager to connect, to understand, to lead in more ways than one.
Chasing silverware again
United know exactly what this competition can offer. They reached the League Cup final last season, only to be beaten by Chelsea. That defeat still lingers, and it shapes their mindset this time around.
Awujo made it clear the standards inside the camp have not shifted.
“As professionals that's always the goal, to win as much as you can – I don't think any of that has changed,” she said. “Obviously, we're not in Champions League this year, the FA Cup hasn't started so I guess in terms of winning silverware the Players Cup is our focus as well as the league right now. Then obviously when the FA Cup comes around the same will apply for that, we're always striving to win the most games and win as much silverware as possible.”
No Europe. No FA Cup yet. The League Cup and the league itself take centre stage. After the bruising setbacks against London City and Chelsea, this tie carries more weight than a routine early-round fixture usually might.
A birthday under the lights
There is one more twist for Awujo. The match falls on her birthday.
For a young midfielder pushing for a bigger role, chasing a deep cup run and already becoming a voice in the dressing room, it sets the stage for a night she will not forget in a hurry – one way or another.
