Manchester United Targets David Raum as Left-Back Option
Manchester United’s search for a left-back has taken them to the Bundesliga, with RB Leipzig defender David Raum now firmly on their radar as an alternative to Lewis Hall.
United have already thrown most of their summer budget at the midfield rebuild, spending around £150m on Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. The middle of the pitch has been refreshed. Other areas have not.
Left-back remains a glaring issue. Luke Shaw’s injury record means he cannot be relied upon across a full season, and United know it. Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall has long been viewed as the preferred solution, with reports of the player open to the move, but any deal for him is off the table this summer.
That has forced United to pivot.
Raum on the shortlist – but doubts over the price
In Germany, BILD, relayed by Sport Witness, report that David Raum is now on United’s left-back shortlist. The 28-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at RB Leipzig and comes off a strong Bundesliga campaign, registering ten goal involvements from defence.
Leipzig are said to want around €40m for the Germany international. They also recognise that, with his contract running down, they may have to accept less.
United, though, are hesitating. The fee is viewed as a “relatively large sum” for a player who is closer to his peak years than the club’s usual profile of younger signings with resale value and development upside. The debate at Old Trafford is clear: pay up for an experienced, ready-made option now, or hold out for a younger, longer-term solution.
Raum himself has already acknowledged the situation. Speaking earlier in the week, he said he is heading into the final year of his deal and that enquiries have arrived, while also insisting he is currently looking forward to the season with Leipzig.
The door isn’t wide open. But it’s not shut, either.
Romano: United “guaranteed” to move for left-back
Time is not on United’s side. The window is closing, and the club can’t afford to miss out on reinforcements in such a fragile position.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has underlined that urgency. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said he can “guarantee” United are still working on a left-back signing and expects a busy final four or five days of the window for the club.
Romano revealed that United had explored a move for Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, even holding a call with Jorge Mendes about the possibility. The numbers, though, were prohibitive. Transfer fee and salary were both deemed too expensive, and United have stepped away from that level of deal “at least for now”.
Instead, Romano expects a more pragmatic solution: an experienced left-back who can provide competition, offer international-level quality and serve as a reliable option rather than a marquee name. He likened the profile to the type of move that once brought Sergio Reguilon in on loan from Tottenham – not necessarily the same player, but that kind of short- to medium-term fix.
United are now trawling that part of the market. Raum fits much of that brief: seasoned, productive, used to high-intensity football and available due to his contract situation.
The question is whether United commit serious money to a 28-year-old in a summer where every pound has already been made to work hard. With Shaw’s fitness a constant concern and the clock ticking, hesitation carries its own risk.
