Manchester United Target Liverpool’s Vincent Joseph as Academy Rivalry Intensifies

The transfer line between Manchester United and Liverpool has been effectively frozen for more than 60 years. Senior players simply do not cross that divide directly anymore. The rivalry is too sharp, the politics too heavy, the scrutiny too fierce.

But the academies? That’s a different kind of battleground.

United have not been shy about testing Liverpool’s resolve at youth level. In 2021 they persuaded Ethan Ennis, then one of the most highly regarded teenagers at Kirkby, to turn down a contract from Liverpool and move down the M62 to Carrington. Ennis is still on United’s books, developing through loan spells at Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town.

Now the focus has shifted to another young forward on Merseyside.

United move for Vincent Joseph

According to The Secret Scout, a well-followed voice on youth football and emerging talent, Liverpool striker Vincent Joseph “looks set to leave” the club after being omitted from their latest list of scholars. For a 16-year-old on the brink of a key development phase, that absence is telling.

United, The Secret Scout reports, “hold strong interest” in Joseph. Scouts have been drawn to his blend of physical presence and sharp link-up play, a profile that always commands attention in an era where genuine No 9s are increasingly rare.

The numbers, at this stage of his career, are only a snapshot but they are eye-catching. Joseph, an England U16 international, made just two appearances in the U18 Premier League last season. He still managed to score three goals. Small sample, big impact.

The Secret Scout summed it up succinctly: “Interesting to see where he ends up. Not many top number 9s around. He will be in demand.”

And he is. The fight for Joseph is not just a domestic scrap.

Bayern and Dortmund join the chase

Manchester United are not alone in circling. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have both sent scouts to watch Joseph on multiple occasions, underlining how quickly his reputation has spread beyond England.

When German giants start turning up at youth fixtures, people notice. Bayern are in the middle of reshaping their forward options at every level of the club. Dortmund, meanwhile, have built a modern identity on identifying and accelerating young talent. Joseph fits the kind of profile both clubs like to get to early.

So United find themselves not only nudging at Liverpool’s academy door, but also competing with two of Europe’s most efficient talent developers. If they win this race, it will be a significant statement about their pulling power at youth level.

Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong also on United’s radar

Joseph is not the only teenager drawing admiring glances from Old Trafford.

United, along with Bayern, are also understood to admire Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong. The 20-year-old is viewed as one of the most promising defensive prospects at Stamford Bridge, a towering presence with the kind of physical and technical mix modern centre-backs need.

Reports relayed by The Peoples Person indicate that Acheampong has appeared on United’s radar. That interest has been met with a firm response in west London. Chelsea are believed to have rejected approaches from several unnamed clubs and consider Acheampong “untouchable” at this stage.

The message from Chelsea is clear: they are not open for business on this one. The message from United is just as clear: they intend to be in the conversation whenever a high-ceiling young defender becomes available.

INEOS era targets the future as well as the present

Much of the talk around INEOS’s arrival and United’s return to the Champions League has centred on marquee signings, big names, and instant upgrades to the first team. That narrative will not go away.

Yet the pursuit of players like Joseph and the admiration for Acheampong reveal another layer to the strategy. United’s hierarchy are not only chasing star power for today; they are also trying to restock the club’s long-term talent pipeline with players who can define the next decade.

Ennis from Liverpool. Interest in Joseph from Liverpool. Admiration for Acheampong at Chelsea. Serious competition from Bayern and Dortmund.

United are pushing into rival territory again. The question now is simple: in this new era, can they turn intent into signatures and reshape the future from the academy up?
