Manchester United Target Mateus Fernandes for Midfield Overhaul
Manchester United’s midfield overhaul is gathering speed, and the next big piece of the plan has a clear name: Mateus Fernandes.
With Ederson already lined up as the first major arrival in the centre of the pitch, United have turned their attention to West Ham United’s standout midfielder, and the momentum behind the move is firmly red.
United Push Hard for £85m-Rated Fernandes
United’s return to the Champions League has changed the scale of their summer. More games, more pressure, more depth required. Ederson is on his way to Old Trafford after the 2026 World Cup, but the club hierarchy want at least one more high-level midfielder through the door before next season kicks off.
Their ideal options, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, are currently out of reach. That reality has sharpened the focus on Fernandes, who emerged as one of the few positives in West Ham’s relegation season.
At 21, the Portugal international has already lived through back-to-back drops to the Championship, having suffered the same fate with Southampton. He has no appetite for a third stint in the second tier and is pushing for a move that keeps him in the elite.
United are understood to have agreed personal terms with Fernandes. That’s the easy part. The hard part is West Ham’s valuation: around £85m, and growing competition from elsewhere.
PSG, Spurs Circle – But United Still Lead
The chase is not one-sided. Paris Saint-Germain have registered their interest, while Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up in recent days and are described as “very close” to agreeing personal terms with the midfielder themselves.
Yet a fresh update from a United-focused source, Theatre of Red, has calmed nerves around Old Trafford. According to that briefing, Roberto De Zerbi’s side remain a “distant second” in the race for Fernandes. The gap only closes if United walk away.
Crucially, reports in recent weeks suggest Fernandes is keen on Old Trafford. The lure is obvious: Champions League football, a starring role in a rebuilt midfield, and the chance to play alongside his idol and compatriot Bruno Fernandes at the Theatre of Dreams.
For United, that personal preference could prove decisive in a crowded market.
Six-Year Offer on the Table for Summerville
Midfield might be the headline act of United’s summer, but it is not the only department under review.
Club sources have consistently pointed to a desire to add a left-sided attacker. Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa has been admired, yet another name has surged to the front of the conversation: Crysencio Summerville.
The Dutch winger, a teammate of Fernandes at West Ham, is enjoying a breakout 2026 World Cup in North America, with two goals in his first two games for the Netherlands. His form on the biggest stage has only intensified interest.
Relegation has weakened West Ham’s hand. Summerville is believed to be available for around £50m, and one reporter has claimed United have already put a six-year contract on the table for the 24-year-old.
The message is clear. United are not just shopping for depth; they are targeting long-term pillars.
Rashford’s Future Holds the Key
Any move for a new wide attacker could accelerate if Marcus Rashford leaves. The England international has been linked with Barcelona, but the Catalan club have not activated their buy option, and a move there currently looks unlikely.
That leaves United at a crossroads. Do they cash in on Rashford to reshape the forward line, or try to fit Summerville into an attack that still includes their academy star?
What is certain is that the club’s summer is being defined by bold, expensive calls.
If they land Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville on top of Ederson, this will not just be a midfield rebuild. It will be a statement about what Manchester United intend to be in the Champions League era to come.
