Hull City Break Transfer Record for Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano

Hull City have torn up their transfer history to land Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.

The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract at the MKM Stadium, with the club holding an option for a further year, in what Hull have confirmed is a new record signing.

The fee remains officially undisclosed, but the club say it eclipses the £20m plus add-ons they paid earlier this month for Greece goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis from Olympiacos. That figure had only just set a new benchmark, overtaking the £13m spent on Ryan Mason from Tottenham back in 2016.

Now Mendy sits at the top of that list.

“I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well,” the Senegal international said after completing the move. “I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

“I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it.”

Mendy arrives with a growing reputation after a standout first season in La Liga. Having started his career at Paris FC, he moved through Spain and made his name at Rayo Vallecano, scoring twice in 28 appearances in his only campaign with the Madrid club.

His final game for Rayo came on one of the biggest stages of his career so far: the Conference League final, where they were beaten by Crystal Palace. It was his second straight appearance in that showpiece match, having also reached the Conference League final the previous year with Real Betis, who lost to Chelsea.

On the international stage, Mendy’s rise has already taken him into the Senegal squad. He won his first cap in March, featuring against The Gambia.

Hull have now invested heavily in the spine of their team, backing youth, athleticism and European experience. Mendy, the record signing and self-described “defender at heart”, now carries the weight of that ambition into the Premier League.
