Manchester United Sign Carlos Baleba for £70 Million
Manchester United have finally landed Carlos Baleba, completing a deal with Brighton that could rise to £70 million and handing Michael Carrick the powerful midfielder he has been chasing for months.
United will pay an initial £65m, with a further £5m tied to performance-related add-ons. The 22-year-old Cameroon international has signed a contract at Old Trafford running until 2031, with the club holding an option to extend it by a further year. This is not a short-term fix. It is a statement.
A Long Chase Ends
Baleba’s name has circled Old Trafford for some time. United’s interest never really went away, even as he quietly grew into one of Brighton’s most imposing midfielders. Now the pursuit is over and the club have their man, a player they believe can transform the engine room.
He arrives with three full Premier League seasons already behind him. Brighton picked him up from Lille in 2023 for an initial £23.2m, developed him, and have now sold him at a huge profit. United, though, are paying for what he is now – and what he could become.
Fernandes Leads the Welcome
Bruno Fernandes has not hidden his enthusiasm. Fresh from being named the 2026 Players’ Player of the Year at the PFA Awards, the United captain underlined just how long the club’s recruitment team have had Baleba in their sights.
"He's a very energetic player. Strong physically, he can push us up the pitch driving the ball," Fernandes said. "Young and exciting, the club have been following him for two years."
Those are not throwaway compliments. They are a glimpse into how United see him fitting in: a midfielder who can carry the ball, break lines, and add bite and dynamism alongside the captain.
Midfield Rebuilt on the Fly
Baleba’s signing completes a sweeping overhaul of United’s midfield in this window. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea. Youri Tielemans has come in from Aston Villa. Now Baleba adds a different profile again – power, legs, and Premier League know-how at just 22.
All three are being asked to settle quickly. On the opening weekend, Santos and Tielemans both started with Fernandes in a new-look trio, only for United to fall to a flat 2-0 defeat away at promoted Hull City. It was a jolt. An early reminder that names on paper do not win points.
Carrick now has another option, and a big one, to change that dynamic.
Pressure from the Start
United’s poor start has sharpened the focus on every new arrival. Baleba is not just walking into a new dressing room; he is stepping into a team under pressure to respond immediately.
