Manchester United Sign Carlos Baleba for £70m: A Midfield Transformation

Manchester United have finally landed Carlos Baleba, completing a deal with Brighton that could rise to £70m and underlining a dramatic reshaping of their midfield.

The 22-year-old Cameroon international becomes United’s third midfield signing of the summer, following Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, in a window defined as much by urgency as ambition. Casemiro has gone, Manuel Ugarte is sidelined with a serious knee injury, and United have responded by pouring around £148m into rebuilding the heart of their team.

Baleba has signed a five-year contract with an option for a further 12 months after United agreed a £65m fee plus £5m in add-ons and a sell-on clause with Brighton. It is a heavyweight investment in a player the club first tried to prise away last summer.

Back then, Brighton made it clear he was not for sale and United backed off. The chase never really disappeared, though. Even as Baleba endured a dip in form last season, United’s interest did not fade. Instead, it hardened. Talks accelerated a week ago and, this time, Brighton were ready to deal.

For Baleba, the move is the realisation of a long-held ambition.

“It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams,” he said. “Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.

“I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick. His experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level.

“The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.”

Carrick’s presence has clearly been a key pull. A former United midfielder who built his reputation on control and intelligence, he now inherits a powerful, athletic option in Baleba to shape in his own image.

Inside the club, the signing is being framed as a cornerstone move rather than a luxury. United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, made no attempt to play down the scale of their expectations.

“Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad,” Wilcox said. “We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League.”

United now head into the new season with a very different look in midfield: Santos, Tielemans and Baleba in, Casemiro out, Ugarte recovering. The club have paid heavily to redraw the lines in that area of the pitch.

The question now is simple and unforgiving: can this rebuilt core carry United back to where they believe they belong?
