Manchester United Confirm Sancho, Malacia, and Casemiro Departures

Manchester United’s summer reset gathered pace on Wednesday as the club confirmed Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro will all leave Old Trafford at the end of their contracts.

All three walk away as free agents, their departures formally sealed in United’s retained list and framed, in the club’s own words, with thanks for their “contributions to Manchester United” and best wishes for the future.

Sancho era ends with questions, not answers

Sancho’s exit closes a chapter that never truly caught fire.

Signed in 2021 from Borussia Dortmund for £73million and billed as the long-term answer on the wing, the England international leaves having made just 83 appearances for United. The flashes were there, but never frequently enough, and his Old Trafford story became one of interruptions and detours rather than sustained impact.

The past season underlined that drift. Sancho spent it on loan at Aston Villa, having already returned to Dortmund on a previous temporary spell and also taken in a stint at Chelsea. The talent that made him one of Europe’s most coveted young attackers now goes back on the open market, with links already circling around potential returns to both Dortmund and Villa.

For United, the parting is stark. A marquee signing, still in his prime years, allowed to leave for nothing. For Sancho, it is another chance to reboot a career that has repeatedly been forced onto a different track.

Malacia’s stop-start spell cut short

If Sancho’s time at United felt incomplete, Malacia’s never really had the chance to begin properly.

The Dutch full-back arrived from Feyenoord in 2022 and, at 26, should have been approaching his peak as a modern, energetic left-back. He managed 50 appearances in all competitions, often showing the aggression and bite that first attracted United.

Then came the setbacks. Injuries stalled his momentum and, with them, his prospects of nailing down a regular place. By the time this retained list landed, the sense was clear: both club and player needed a clean break.

Malacia now leaves as a free agent, a player whose Old Trafford spell will be remembered more for what it might have been than what it was.

Casemiro bows out after four seasons

At the other end of the spectrum stands Casemiro, a veteran midfielder whose time at United carried the weight of his Real Madrid pedigree.

The Brazilian, currently at the World Cup with his country, spent four seasons in Manchester after his move from the Bernabéu. He racked up 160 games and scored 26 goals, numbers that underline how central he became to United’s structure during his stay.

His arrival was meant to inject authority and experience into a midfield in need of both. Across those four years, he provided exactly that: leadership, goals from deep, and a competitive edge in the biggest fixtures.

Now, with his contract up and his international commitments ongoing, Casemiro steps away as part of a broader shift in United’s squad profile.

A line drawn under an era

The announcement of these exits on the retained list does more than tidy up paperwork. It draws a line under three very different Old Trafford stories: a blockbuster signing that never quite settled, a promising full-back stalled by injuries, and a seasoned winner who offered stability in turbulent times.

United have chosen to move on. The question now is how quickly, and how cleverly, they replace what has gone.
