Arsenal Target Brighton’s Jack Hinshelwood Amid Transfer Pursuit
Arsenal have moved to the front of the queue for Brighton’s Jack Hinshelwood, with the Premier League champions now said to be leading Manchester United and Manchester City in the chase for the highly rated midfielder.
The Sun report that Mikel Arteta has placed the 21-year-old at the top of his remaining transfer wishlist, with Brighton expected to demand between £43m and £51m for their latest academy success story.
Champions still hungry
Winning a first league title in 22 years has not slowed Arsenal’s recruitment drive. Arteta’s squad has already been reinforced with Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie and Illan Meslier, a spine-strengthening quartet that underlines how aggressively the club are attacking this window.
Arsenal, though, are not done. The club are still in the market for a centre-back, a winger and potentially a striker. Now, a new name has moved into sharp focus.
Hinshelwood, who broke through at Brighton last season, is viewed inside Arsenal as a player who can elevate the champions’ midfield options. The report states he has been marked down as a “top priority” target, with Arteta said to see him as a “perfect addition”.
Versatility at a premium
Naturally a defensive midfielder, Hinshelwood has also operated higher up the pitch. That flexibility has not gone unnoticed. He delivered four goals and four assists in the Premier League last season, an impressive return for a youngster still learning the division and adapting to multiple roles.
Brighton, as ever, hold firm cards. Hinshelwood, the son of former Seagulls player Adam Hinshelwood, has three years left on his contract. That security places the south-coast club in a strong position at the negotiating table and explains the mooted £43m–£51m price bracket.
Brighton would prefer to keep him. The suggestion, though, is that an offer in that range could force a serious conversation.
Centre-back search hits resistance
While the Hinshelwood pursuit gathers pace, Arsenal’s hunt for a new centre-back has become more complicated.
Ezri Konsa has emerged as the leading candidate, with reports on Friday claiming a move from Aston Villa to the Emirates was “99% done”. That claim has been quickly cooled.
Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, speaking on Saturday morning, stressed that Konsa remains only on Arsenal’s shortlist for now, describing him as a player who is “very appreciated” by the club rather than one on the brink of signing.
The champions have explored alternatives, but doors are closing. Romano has ruled out moves for Atletico Madrid’s Marc Pubill and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah after both clubs pushed back firmly.
On Pubill, Romano was clear: “The player is not for sale. Atletico Madrid have no intention to sell.”
Leverkusen’s stance on Quansah was equally blunt. “Arsenal made official contact with Bayer Leverkusen… The answer from Leverkusen is that they don’t want to sell the player. So they rejected the approach,” Romano said.
So Arsenal push on. Defensive targets are proving hard to prise away, yet the champions still circle one of Brighton’s brightest young talents. If they decide to test that £51m ceiling for Hinshelwood, the next major move in their title defence may come from the heart of midfield.
