Manchester United Monitor Alejandro Balde's Future at Barcelona
Manchester United are tracking Alejandro Balde’s situation closely as Barcelona edge towards a decisive call on the left-back’s future.
The Catalan club have authorised his agent, Jorge Mendes, to search for a new destination, a clear signal that the door is open. That message grew louder on Sunday night when Balde was left out of the squad for the trip to Elche at the Martinez Valero, a fresh indication that negotiations over his exit are already in motion.
United watching, Balde intrigued
Balde’s name is circulating across Europe. England, Portugal and Italy are all in the conversation, but, according to Catalan outlet Sport, it is Manchester United that appeal to him most.
His stance has shifted. All summer, the Spanish international insisted he wanted to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona. The arrival and presence of Joao Cancelo on the left has changed the landscape. Direct competition with such an established full-back has pushed Balde to reconsider his options.
United, for their part, are not putting all their hopes on one player. The Manchester Evening News reports that the 22-year-old is just one of several left-backs under consideration at Old Trafford.
What is not in doubt is United’s need. Luke Shaw is heading into the final year of his contract. Diogo Dalot has been pushed further forward, and both he and Noussair Mazraoui are naturally right-backs rather than long-term solutions on the opposite flank. A specialist is required.
Cost versus quality
On a football level, Balde fits the profile. Young, quick, attack-minded and already schooled at the highest level, he ticks most of United’s boxes. The club have already opened lines of communication with Mendes.
But another name sits on their shortlist, and this one comes with a very different price tag. Jorge Salinas, the 19-year-old Racing Santander left-back, is being studied as a cheaper alternative. His release clause stands at around £16 million, a fraction of what Barcelona want for Balde.
That financial gap explains United’s caution. They are monitoring Balde, but have not yet made a formal offer. So far, the only concrete bid on Barcelona’s table has come from Benfica, and Sport report that proposal falls well below the valuation set by the Spanish giants.
Aston Villa are currently seen as the club most capable of actually meeting Barcelona’s demands. Even they, though, would need to cash in on one of their own players before moving decisively.
Barcelona’s stance is clear. They need to create financial room in their wage bill and transfer planning, but they are not prepared to lose Balde on the cheap. Only months ago, the club internally valued him at around €40–45 million, and they are not inclined to back away from that figure.
Barcelona already planning the aftermath
With the exit door now ajar, Barcelona’s sporting department have started to work on life after Balde. The left-back position cannot be left exposed over a long, demanding season across multiple competitions.
If Balde goes, the left side would largely rest on Cancelo and Gerard Martin. That is thin cover for a club with Barcelona’s ambitions and schedule, and the hierarchy know it.
So the race is set: United weighing quality against cost, Barcelona balancing finances against sporting value, and Balde waiting to see which project will truly commit to him as a first-choice left-back.
