Manchester United’s search for a left-back has hit a firm brick wall in Birmingham.

Ian Maatsen, the Aston Villa defender United sounded out over the weekend, is going nowhere. Not this summer.

Villa shut the door

United have been working the market for a new left-back before the window closes, with the position seen as one they can strengthen without first forcing an exit. A striker could also arrive if Joshua Zirkzee leaves, but that situation remains tangled.

Zirkzee has already turned down a move to Fiorentina, while Juventus circle with a proposal on the table: €2.5m for a loan and an option to buy for €30m at the end of the season. His future is in play. The left-back situation, at least with Maatsen, is not.

Over the weekend, reporter Pete O’Rourke revealed that United had made an enquiry for Maatsen, testing Villa’s resolve over the 24-year-old. The response from Villa Park has been emphatic.

Sky Sports’ Danyal Khan indicated Villa’s stance in no uncertain terms. The club intend to keep Maatsen and are preparing a new contract for the Dutchman. United, he said, had “explored” the possibility but were being forced to keep their options open and scan the market for alternatives as the deadline looms.

Villa’s message? Hands off.

Romano: “Untouchable. Decision made.”

By Monday lunchtime, Fabrizio Romano had effectively ended the story.

He confirmed that United had indeed been among the clubs to look at Maatsen, but reported that Villa view him as a “key player; untouchable” and will not sell him this summer. The line was stark and final: “Decision made.”

So United’s left-back shortlist shrinks again.

Alejandro Balde is another name who will not be heading to Old Trafford. The Barcelona defender, 22, is determined to stay where he is, shutting down any realistic prospect of a deal in this window.

United may be forced to wait

The long-term picture looks very different to the frantic short-term scramble. Ben Jacobs has reported that United already have Lewis Hall’s “buy in” over a future move, with the Newcastle left-back seen as a target for the summer of 2027.

That timeline underlines the dilemma at Old Trafford. Do they rush into a short-term fix now, or hold their nerve and wait for a player they truly want down the line?

With Villa locking Maatsen away and Barcelona standing firm on Balde, the clock is ticking. It’s entirely possible United emerge from the final 36 hours of this window without a new left-back at all, betting instead on patience and a move for Hall next year.

For a club under pressure to deliver now, that would be a bold call.
