Manchester United's Next Defensive Target: Josip Stanisic
Manchester United spent the summer ripping up their midfield at Michael Carrick’s insistence. Three new faces came through the door — Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba — as INEOS even tried, and failed, to squeeze in a late move for Louis Page on deadline day.
Twelve months earlier, the co-owners had poured their energy into sharpening the attack. Logic says the next rebuild will be at the back. The need is obvious. The head coach wanted defensive reinforcements this summer, yet the 20-time English champions chose to sit tight and wait.
United’s next project: the backline
Almost every defender in the squad is effectively on trial. Only two can feel remotely secure about their long-term status. United’s hierarchy, though, have a type: they love a player who can plug several gaps at once.
That is where Josip Stanisic comes in.
The Bayern Munich defender has emerged as a serious name on United’s radar. The Croat is the kind of flexible operator modern superclubs crave. Primarily a right-back, the 26-year-old can also step inside as a centre-back and, thanks to his two-footed comfort, slot in on the left.
Last season underlined his value. He racked up 43 appearances in all competitions: 26 at right-back, 15 at left-back, and two in the middle. One player, three positions, no drop-off in level. For a club staring at a looming defensive overhaul, that profile is gold dust.
A crowded race for Stanisic
United are not alone. According to Fussballdaten, the Croatia international is being tracked by several of Europe’s elite. PSG, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Liverpool are all in the frame, turning any pursuit into a heavyweight contest.
Prising him away from Bavaria will be expensive and awkward. Stanisic is tied to Bayern until 2029, a contract that hands the Bundesliga champions all the leverage they need. Reports indicate Bayern will only even listen if bids land in the £47 million to £56 million bracket, or roughly €55 million to €65 million.
Those around the deal describe him as one of the most closely watched versatile defenders in European football. Clubs admire his blend of Bundesliga and European Cup experience, and United, in particular, see him as an answer to their need for depth at both right-back and centre-back.
Bayern, for their part, are expected to push hard: a high fixed fee, hefty performance-related bonuses, and a sell-on clause built into any agreement. They know what they have.
Can United really make it happen?
On paper, United should be able to handle that kind of fee. This is a club used to operating at the top end of the market. The real questions sit elsewhere.
Is Stanisic willing to walk away from the Allianz Arena, where he has carved out a regular role and a long-term deal? And does he fit the current INEOS blueprint, which has leaned heavily towards recruiting players already proven in the Premier League?
United need a new defensive leader who can cover multiple roles. Stanisic looks tailor-made for that job. Now the test is simple: are they prepared to bend their own transfer rules to get him?
