Manchester United Eye Edmond Tapsoba with £43m Price Tag

Manchester United will have to break past the £40m barrier if they want Edmond Tapsoba this summer, with Bayer Leverkusen setting a £43million asking price for their captain.

Leverkusen do not want to lose the 27-year-old. They have made that clear. But they have also made one thing equally clear: a “suitable financial offer” changes everything.

Premier League trio in the hunt

According to fussballdaten, United are far from alone. Newcastle and Tottenham are also in the race and have been keeping close contact with Tapsoba’s camp as they weigh up the cost of a deal.

All three clubs see the same profile. A central defender described in Germany as “tailor-made” for teams that build from the back at high speed and ask their centre-backs to defend big spaces. A modern organiser who can step into midfield, win duels, and still contribute at the other end.

Tapsoba underlined that last season. Five goals in 29 Bundesliga games, a key pillar in Leverkusen’s back line and a threat in the opposition box. Earlier this year he signed a new contract running until 2031, a deal that hands Leverkusen huge leverage in any negotiations.

That has not stopped speculation. Reports in Germany suggest the Burkina Faso international is open to a new challenge, and Newcastle in particular are said to view him as a ready-made leader for their defence.

United’s defensive interest on hold

United’s interest is not new. They were linked with Tapsoba in 2024, a summer that ultimately saw them bring in Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt instead. Those signings have eased the immediate pressure at centre-back, and the club’s recruitment drive has moved elsewhere.

This window, the focus has shifted to left-back and central midfield as Michael Carrick reshapes his squad.

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have already come through the door at Old Trafford to bolster the middle of the park. Even so, United are still open to adding another midfielder if the right option appears, leaving the door slightly ajar for late movement.

On the left flank, United have pushed for Lewis Hall, seeing the Newcastle defender as an ideal fit to strengthen that side. Newcastle’s response has been blunt: Hall is not for sale. Club Brugge have taken the same stance over Joaquin Seys, shutting down another avenue.

Carrick wants more before deadline

Carrick has not hidden his desire for further reinforcements before the window closes.

“We've improved the group,” he said. “We've improved the squad in different ways. Balance, quality and the direction we want to go in.

“So the players that we've brought in, I think we've done really good business and we've got some top, top, top players. So we're delighted with that. We always want to improve.

“We want more, we need more. We keep looking forward to how we can do that. So that never stops. We're conscious of that and we've got to keep pushing.”

The question now is simple. With a £43m price tag, rival Premier League interest and other priorities on the table, will United push for Tapsoba – or watch a potential long-term defensive leader head to one of their competitors?
