Manchester United Pursue Chelsea Defenders as Left-Back Search Intensifies
Manchester United have thrown money and energy at reshaping Michael Carrick’s squad this summer. The midfield has been ripped up and rebuilt, £150 million poured into the centre of the pitch with Andrey Santos from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Carlos Baleba from Brighton all arriving to change the feel of United’s engine room.
But with the window ticking towards its final days, one problem refuses to go away.
They still don’t have their left-back solution.
Left-back hunt turns short-term
What started as a targeted search has become a scramble for answers. United want a new left-back, badly. The position has jumped up the priority list as Luke Shaw moves into the final year of his contract and Carrick continues to view Patrick Dorgu more as a winger than a natural full-back.
The big-name options have drifted out of reach. Targets identified earlier in the summer are proving too expensive or simply unavailable. One of those was Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, a player United liked but ultimately could not afford at the prices being quoted.
So the strategy is shifting.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that United are now seriously considering a loan move to plug the gap before the deadline, a stop-gap solution rather than a marquee arrival. The club could repeat the 2023 playbook, when they moved late to bring in Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham on a temporary deal.
“I will not be surprised if they end up with a solution for a player who can be almost a guarantee, so maybe not a superstar name like Balde, because they considered Balde... but the deal is too expensive,” Romano said on his YouTube show. “But just as a comparison, you remember when United signed Sergio Reguilon? [It will be] something similar. That kind of player, an experienced left-back who can provide competition and also an international profile.”
United want reliability, experience, and someone who can compete with Shaw immediately. They may now have to accept that it comes in the form of a short-term fix rather than a long-term cornerstone.
Chelsea defenders on United’s radar
The defensive reshuffle does not stop at left-back.
Manchester United have also been offered the chance to sign Chelsea centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo and are tracking his team-mate Josh Acheampong as they look to reinforce the heart of their defence before the window shuts.
Tosin, 28, appears to be edging towards the exit at Stamford Bridge. He was left out of Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham and his No. 4 shirt has already gone to new signing Valentin Barco, a clear signal of where he stands in the pecking order.
According to talkSPORT, United want another centre-back to deepen their options around Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Leny Yoro. Injuries to Yoro, Martinez and De Ligt have sharpened that need and left Carrick’s defensive plans looking fragile just as the season starts to bite.
Tosin is understood to be available for around £20 million, a fee that places him firmly in the “opportunity” bracket rather than the luxury category. He brings experience and Premier League know-how, having rebuilt his career after leaving Manchester City.
The defender spent 17 years at City, joining their academy in 2003 and making his senior debut in 2016. He managed only eight first-team appearances before moving to Fulham in 2020, where he finally established himself as a regular in the top flight and a dependable presence at the back.
United’s interest does not stop with him. They are also said to admire Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong, one of the brightest prospects in the London club’s system. But that pursuit looks far more complicated. Acheampong is regarded as “untouchable” at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea unwilling to even entertain offers for the teenager.
So United push on. A short-term left-back. A possible £20m centre-back from Chelsea. A teenager they like but cannot touch.
The window is closing fast, and Old Trafford still needs answers in defence.
