Manchester United in Talks to Secure Bruno Fernandes' Future
Manchester United have started preliminary talks with Bruno Fernandes over a new contract, determined to shut down the noise around their captain’s future and keep him at Old Trafford long term.
The club have already armed themselves with a safety net. United plan to trigger the one-year extension clause in the former Sporting CP playmaker’s deal, a move designed to stop him drifting into the final months of his contract with his value exposed and their leverage weakened.
As it stands, the Portugal international has around 10 months left on his £220,000-a-week agreement. United can unilaterally extend it by another year, but the hierarchy want more than a stopgap. The intention is clear: secure a full, formal renewal before the end of the calendar year and kill off the transfer speculation that has followed him through the summer.
Fernandes is doing his part on the pitch to make their decision feel non-negotiable. At the weekend he delivered a performance that underlined exactly why United are so desperate to keep him, smashing a hat-trick and adding an assist in a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town. That display arrived just days after he was crowned PFA Player of the Year, a personal peak that only strengthens his bargaining position.
The pressure on United is not just internal. Galatasaray have emerged as a serious contender for his signature, with reports indicating the Turkish club are ready to put a four-year offer on the table that would effectively double his current wages. The proposal from Istanbul is said to include a £3.5m signing-on fee, a package tailored to tempt a veteran playmaker entering the final stretch of his elite career.
This is not the first time Fernandes has stood close to the exit door. Last summer brought intense speculation over a move to the Saudi Pro League, with his agent, Miguel Pinho, holding high-level talks in Riyadh with Al-Hilal. The Saudi side were prepared to go to extraordinary lengths, reportedly ready to hand the midfielder £200m over three years.
United resisted then, and the numbers since his arrival in January 2020 explain why. Fernandes has racked up 110 goals and 109 assists in 329 appearances, production on a scale few modern midfielders can match. Last season he set a new Premier League record with 21 assists, underlining his status as one of the most creative players the competition has seen.
He has repeatedly spoken about the demands at Old Trafford and his responsibility within that environment, and his influence remains central as United attempt to build a new era under Michael Carrick. Tactically and emotionally, he is still the heartbeat of the side.
To reflect that, United are understood to be ready to go big. It has been suggested the club are willing to make Fernandes their highest-paid player, with a new deal that would add at least another year and lift his weekly wage to around £350,000.
The talks have started. The extension clause is there if needed. Now the question is simple: can United turn leverage and intent into a signature before one of Europe’s most productive creators decides his future lies elsewhere?
