Manchester United Abandons €45m Éderson Transfer Deal
Manchester United have dramatically walked away from a €45 million deal for Atalanta midfielder Éderson, just weeks after the transfer was described as “100 per cent confirmed”.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano revealed that United have informed Atalanta the move is off, with the Premier League club changing course over concerns about the Brazilian’s fitness. Atalanta, for their part, are adamant the player is fully fit and ready to resume as part of their squad.
What looked like a formality has collapsed in the space of a few days.
A done deal that never was
In early June, Romano had outlined what seemed a straightforward piece of business. All documents between United and Atalanta were completed, a €45m package was agreed, and personal terms with Éderson had been settled since May.
“First signing: 100% confirmed,” Romano wrote at the time, underlining United’s intent to move quickly in the market after a resurgent second half of the season under Michael Carrick that ended with a third-place finish and Champions League qualification.
The club’s return to Europe’s elite competition brought fresh financial muscle and renewed appeal. Éderson, impressive for Atalanta and part of Brazil’s national-team picture, looked tailor-made to bolster a midfield being rebuilt for the rigours of Champions League football.
The player himself spoke at the World Cup of a move that was essentially in place, even if he was keen to keep his focus on the tournament.
“I have to wait. Now I have to enjoy this moment, then we will see,” he told reporters. “Certainly, everything is almost done, but now I have to enjoy this moment. This is a wonderful experience and you have to enjoy the most.”
The pressure finally told
Then came the twist.
Romano’s latest update was stark: “Éderson to Manchester United, deal OFF and considered as collapsed as Man Utd informed Atalanta. Atalanta believe Éderson is 100% fit and will welcome the midfielder back as part of their squad, as Man United changed their plans. Éderson won’t join #MUFC.”
No drawn-out saga. No late-night rescue. Just a hard stop.
For United, who have endured a long history of tangled transfer chases, this is a rare instance of a near-completed deal being abandoned at such an advanced stage, particularly at a time when their recruitment strategy had seemed more streamlined under the current regime.
Questions will inevitably swirl around the medical assessments and what, specifically, triggered the club’s change of heart, but for now neither side has gone beyond the broad outline: United grew uneasy; Atalanta insist there is nothing wrong.
A bargain that slipped away
The collapse also comes after praise for the fee involved. Former Tottenham midfielder Sandro, speaking last month, argued that United were securing serious value compared to other midfielders on the market.
“I think Éderson as well, £38 million I believe,” he told BritishGambler.co.uk. “When you think, Man Utd are linked with Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Tchouameni from Real Madrid, they’re all obviously world-class players, but they are so expensive comparatively.
“I think £38 million for Éderson is a bit of a bargain, really, in today’s market, right?”
Sandro highlighted Éderson’s blend of physicality and technical quality, and his suitability for English football.
“I know that he’s a top midfielder. He went to Brazil a few times with the national team. I saw a couple of videos, whilst I didn’t follow him game by game, I know that he’s strong. He has that physical ability to play in the Premier League and I know that a few other clubs wanted to sign him from the Premier League as well.”
Instead of becoming the first signing of United’s summer, Éderson now returns to Bergamo, where Atalanta will treat him as a central part of their plans.
United, flush with Champions League money and momentum from Carrick’s strong finish, must pivot quickly. The midfield gap they thought they had filled is open again. The question now is not whether they can spend, but who they trust enough to step into that space.
