Manchester United 25-man Premier League Squad: Mainoo Omission Explained

Manchester United have locked in their 25-man Premier League squad for the 2026-27 season – and one missing name instantly caught the eye.

The club have submitted their senior list in line with league rules, which cap squads at 25 senior players and restrict clubs to a maximum of 17 who do not qualify as ‘homegrown’.

To earn that homegrown status, a player must have been registered with a club in England or Wales for three full seasons before turning 21. United have hit the quota comfortably, naming eight homegrown players, including Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount, alongside 15 who do not meet the criteria in Michael Carrick’s senior group.

On paper, that looks routine. Then you scan the list again. No Kobbie Mainoo.

The midfielder’s absence would have raised alarms a year ago. He spent the first half of last season on the fringes under Ruben Amorim, squeezed towards the margins before Carrick’s arrival dragged him back into the heart of the side and restored his influence.

This time, though, there is no drama attached to his name. Just a technicality.

Born after the start of 2005, Mainoo is officially classed as an Under-21 player for this campaign. Premier League rules mean anyone in that bracket does not need to be registered in the 25-man squad and is automatically eligible to play. No paperwork. No risk. No story beyond the regulations.

The same applies to Leny Yoro. The defender turns 21 in November, so he also falls under the U-21 exemption and is absent from the senior list without any impact on his availability. Both can feature freely throughout the season.

Behind that duo sits a deeper pool of youth talent, all listed as U-21 and all technically available for first-team selection. Ayden Heaven, Tyler Fletcher, Shea Lacey, Harry Amass and summer signing Tynan Thompson are among those who could be called upon if form, injuries or opportunity open a door.

Supporters will keep a particularly close eye on Paraguayan left-back Diego Leon, tipped as one who might soon make the jump. Recent arrival Cristian Orozco is another name drawing attention inside the club, a prospect whose progress will be tracked carefully over the coming months.

There is also a more sentimental thread running through the academy ranks this year. Kai Rooney, son of Old Trafford legend Wayne Rooney, is listed as an U-21 player for the first time after stepping up as a first-year scholar in the summer. Alongside him in that initial stage of the apprenticeship programme is Jacey Carrick, Michael Carrick’s own son.

United’s official squad list, then, tells two stories at once: a tightly managed senior group shaped by Premier League rules, and a swelling generation of youngsters waiting just off stage, ready to see how quickly promise can turn into minutes.
