Manchester United Target £14m Left-Back Jorge Salinas

Manchester United are ready to muscle in on Racing Santander’s negotiations for highly rated left-back Jorge Salinas, with the Spanish club’s own sporting director admitting the teenager can go if his £14 million release clause is triggered.

United’s need is clear. Luke Shaw is entering the final year of his contract, and the position has turned into a puzzle Michael Carrick still hasn’t solved. Patrick Dorgu has been pushed higher up the pitch, while Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui continue to plug gaps on the wrong flank, both naturally right-backs rather than long-term answers on the left.

The academy offers promise but not yet certainty. Harry Amass is viewed as a serious prospect, yet he has no top-flight minutes to lean on. Newcastle’s Lewis Hall had emerged as the preferred option, his Premier League exposure and ceiling ticking plenty of boxes.

That path has all but closed. After a summer of upheaval at St James’ Park, with Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali among the headline departures, Newcastle are in no mood to lose another young asset. With less than a fortnight remaining in the window, United are being forced to move quickly and think creatively.

Salinas has surged to the top of that list.

The 19-year-old was one of Racing Santander’s standout performers last season, his energy and delivery from the left a key part of their promotion push back into La Liga. Across all competitions, he produced seven assists in 34 games, a return that has not gone unnoticed across Spain.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have already circled. United are now right in that mix.

Spanish outlet Infobae report that Atletico have already tested Santander’s resolve with a £12m bid, only to be knocked back. Racing are standing firm: the release clause sits at around €16m (£14m), and they are pointing suitors straight at that figure.

Racing have tried to protect their asset. Salinas is under contract until 2029 and the club have tabled an improved deal. For now, the full-back is said to be waiting, watching the final days of the window unfold before committing to anything long term.

Atletico were expected to lead the chase for the Spain U19 international, but their stance has opened the door. Reports in Spain suggest their hesitation has allowed United to step in, with Atletico now imposing a weekend deadline on themselves to get the transfer done. Miss that, and they are prepared to walk away, potentially leaving Carrick’s side with a clear run at the youngster.

Inside Racing Santander, the noise is growing louder by the day – and it is starting to grate.

Sporting director Chema Aragon, speaking via SportWitness, did not hide his irritation at the constant speculation swirling around their teenage star.

“You’re all going on about this every day. First, it’s about the release clause; then, it’s about one club or another,” he said. “Thankfully, the kid is focused. If someone comes along, brings the €16m, and the boy likes the team, he’ll leave.”

The situation could hardly be more stark. The price is set. The player is listening. Atletico are stalling.

United now have a narrow window to decide whether Salinas is the answer to a problem they have been trying to fix for years.
