Manchester City Signs Ayyoub Bouaddi for €100 Million

Manchester City have won the race for Ayyoub Bouaddi, striking a huge deal with Lille for the 18-year-old Moroccan midfielder who lit up the World Cup and had Liverpool circling earlier in the summer.

City have agreed a €100 million ($116.9 million) package, paying an initial €95 million ($111 million) with a further €5 million ($5.9 million) in add-ons. It is an extraordinary outlay for a teenager, but it speaks to the scale of the hole left in their midfield and the conviction inside the Etihad that Bouaddi is ready to step straight into it.

Lille did not buckle easily. The French club wanted to keep Bouaddi for at least one more season and held firm on a hefty valuation before finally agreeing to let him go in this window. Interest had swelled after his standout displays for Morocco at this year’s World Cup, where his maturity in the middle of the pitch turned heads across Europe.

“Really impressive — he's only 18, but he plays like a 30-year-old,” Vieira said, praising Bouaddi’s tactical awareness, positioning, ability to play out from the back and his “really strong personality”.

City clearly saw the same thing. With Rodri gone and Bernardo Silva also heading out, the Premier League champions have ripped up the core of their midfield and started again. Elliot Anderson has already arrived for a club-record £116 million ($158.2 million). Bouaddi now becomes the next pillar in that rebuild, a marquee signing designed not just to plug a gap, but to reshape the centre of the pitch for years.

The contract reflects that ambition. Bouaddi will sign a five-year deal with an option for a further year, a long-term commitment that underlines how central City expect him to be in the post-Rodri era and under a new manager.

Because this is Enzo Maresca’s project now. Succeeding Pep Guardiola is a brutal assignment, and City’s hierarchy know it. They are determined to hand Maresca the strongest possible squad, and their work in midfield is not finished yet.

Tijjani Reijnders departed in the past week, and the club intend to replace every key exit. City have set their sights on Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez, though prising him from Stamford Bridge will not be simple, with Chelsea unlikely to even pick up the phone for less than $130 million. Roma’s Manu Kone is also on the list, as City’s recruitment team grind through the final hours of the window.

For now, though, the headline belongs to Bouaddi. Liverpool watched him. Europe watched him. City paid for him.
