Manchester City Rejects Barcelona’s Second Bid for Rodri as Transfer Stalls

Manchester City have once again declined Barcelona's second bid for midfielder Rodri, maintaining a firm stance on their valuation despite the player's clear wish to join the Catalan club. The Premier League champions rejected the improved offer, insisting on a higher fee before considering a transfer.

Barcelona’s Revised Proposal Falls Short

The Spanish giants increased their bid to around €60 million, attempting to close the gap after an initial offer of €45 million plus €15 million in add-ons was dismissed outright by City. Reports from The Times reveal that Manchester City demand a total package near £70 million (about €81 million), with additional performance bonuses, showing no sign of lowering their price even though Rodri is entering the final year of his contract.

Rodri’s Strong Preference for Barcelona

Despite stalled talks, Barcelona remain hopeful due to Rodri's eagerness to move. The pursuit gained momentum following direct involvement from coach Hansi Flick, who reportedly spoke with the player to present his vision. This personal approach seems to have convinced Rodri, who had previously been cautious because of interest from Real Madrid.

"Out of respect for Madrid, as they have been class, Rodri informed them that his decision is to join Barca," said the midfielder’s agent, Pablo Barquero, during an interview with Spanish radio station El Larguero.

Replacing Rodri: A Challenge for Manchester City

One reason for City's strict valuation could be the challenge of finding a suitable replacement. Manager Enzo Maresca has targeted Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea as the preferred successor. Yet, prising Fernandez away may prove more costly, with Chelsea reportedly asking £120 million for the 2022 World Cup winner, who is under contract until 2032.

What Lies Ahead in the Transfer Battle?

Barcelona are unlikely to abandon their pursuit, viewing the addition of a midfield leader as critical, especially with ongoing injury concerns over Frenkie de Jong, who might need surgery. With the transfer window narrowing, the ball rests with Barcelona to either increase their offer or risk losing their top target.

While Manchester City rarely obstruct players wanting to leave, they are standing firm on their price this time. Rodri's desire to play at the Spotify Camp Nou gives Barcelona leverage, but without a substantial rise in funds, the deal may fall through.
