Manchester City Eyes Enzo Fernandez as Transfer Deadline Approaches
Manchester City are actively exploring a move for Enzo Fernandez in the final days of the window, with the Chelsea midfielder still sitting at the top of Enzo Maresca’s wish list after the departure of Rodri.
City have already moved once in midfield, bringing in Ayyoub Bouaddi, the highly-rated 18-year-old Morocco international who caught the eye at the World Cup. That deal hasn’t closed the door on more business in the middle of the pitch. If anything, it has underlined how aggressively City intend to reshape Maresca’s engine room.
They want at least one more midfielder. Maybe two. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is on their radar. So is Roma’s Manu Kone. But Fernandez is the headline act.
Chelsea’s £120m stance under strain
Chelsea set out their position earlier this month. Clubs were told to submit offers worth up to £120m for Fernandez by a firm deadline: Friday, 5pm, two weeks ago. Manchester City simply let that time pass.
The interest, though, never went away.
That deadline now looks more like a negotiating tool than a hard stop. When Sky Sports News spoke to Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso last week, he refused to offer any guarantees over Fernandez’s future. No promises, no firm commitment. Just a short assessment: the midfielder was working hard ahead of the Monday Night Football clash with Fulham.
Then came the team sheet for Alonso’s first Premier League game in charge. Injuries had bitten into Chelsea’s midfield options, with Moises Caicedo among those unavailable. On paper, it looked the perfect opening for Fernandez to walk straight into the starting XI.
Instead, Alonso turned to Reece James alongside Romeo Lavia in central midfield. Fernandez was left on the bench.
When he finally came on, the atmosphere told its own story. Fulham supporters booed him. Chelsea fans, who had given him a mixed reception when he came off the bench against Real Sociedad in their final pre-season friendly at Stamford Bridge around 10 days earlier, responded with far more warmth this time.
The situation feels unstable. Fernandez is involved, but not central. Valued, but perhaps not indispensable.
A strained relationship, a huge decision
Any negotiations between Chelsea and Manchester City will be loaded with tension. The relationship between the clubs is already frayed.
Chelsea’s season was thrown off course around Christmas when Enzo Maresca left the club. City’s role in that move forced them to pay £17m in compensation, a figure that still stings at Stamford Bridge and lingers over every potential conversation between the two boards.
So what happens if City now come back for one of Chelsea’s most valuable assets?
Chelsea had previously signalled that £120m was the number. Whether they stand firm on that valuation, soften it, or use City’s need as leverage remains to be seen. The power play is obvious: a club still reshaping its squad, holding a player its former coach now desperately wants at his new home.
Maresca’s top target, City’s financial firepower
What is clear is Maresca’s admiration. Inside the Etihad, Fernandez is seen as the manager’s top target for this window. The profile fits: technically sharp, press-resistant, able to dictate tempo and connect phases of play in the way Rodri once did for City.
City, crucially, have room to move. They have sold a record number of players in this transfer window and freed up significant funds. The money is there. The question is how far they are willing to go.
Do they push towards Chelsea’s previous £120m benchmark for a player their new manager loves? Or do they test the strain in west London and try to force a compromise from a club already wrestling with injuries, tactical change and a fanbase still working out exactly where Fernandez fits?
The deadline is closing in. The interest is real. Now it comes down to how much Manchester City are prepared to pay, and how much Chelsea can really afford to say no.
