Man City vs Coventry: Enzo Fernandez Set for Debut at Etihad
Manchester City have thrown money at the squad. Now Enzo Maresca has to make it look like a plan.
After a frantic Deadline Day that delivered Enzo Fernandez, Iliman Ndiaye and Ayyoub Bouaddi, City go into Saturday’s clash with Coventry not just stacked, but crowded. Depth is no longer the problem. Selection is.
And there is no doubt who walks straight into the spotlight.
Fernandez reshapes the midfield
Fernandez arrives for a British record-equalling £125m fee, and he has not come to watch. The expectation inside the club is clear: he starts. Right away. At the Etihad. Against Coventry.
His presence instantly redraws the midfield map. Marc Guehi’s brief audition as a holding midfielder looks done. Useful, yes. Permanent, no. With Fernandez available, City can restore a more natural structure in the middle, with Elliot Anderson likely to sit alongside him and knit things together.
That solidity behind the ball ramps up the tension further forward. The attacking midfield line suddenly feels crowded. Rayan Cherki has opened the season sharply, Phil Foden’s talent speaks for itself, and neither can afford a dip with this level of competition. This is exactly what City wanted when they spent so aggressively: two players for every role, and no guarantees for anyone.
Ndiaye, a signing that could rise to £65m, may have to wait for his moment. Bouaddi, brought in for £86m, also looks set for a watching brief from the bench. When a club spends at this level, reputations and price tags clash with reality. Not everyone plays.
Defence finally finds a rhythm
At the back, the picture is starting to settle after weeks of tinkering.
Abdukodir Khusanov is in line to start on the right side of the defence. Ruben Dias and Guehi are expected to form the central pairing, with Josko Gvardiol continuing on the left. It is the kind of back four that screams stability rather than experimentation, and that matters.
Coventry will arrive at the Etihad looking for any hint of uncertainty. Early in the campaign, City offered plenty of it with constant reshuffles. This version looks more assured, more predictable in the best possible way.
Injuries and the likely XI
Not everyone is ready. Matheus Nunes remains a doubt, still working towards full fitness. Jeremy Doku is out, sidelined by the calf injury he picked up against Arsenal in the Community Shield.
Even so, Maresca’s options are formidable. The expected City lineup to face Coventry:
