Lucas Bergvall Signs New Contract with Tottenham

Lucas Bergvall has performed a sharp U-turn at Tottenham, signing a new contract just three months after telling the club he wanted out.

The 20-year-old Sweden midfielder had pushed for a summer move, frustrated by limited minutes following Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival late last season. His situation quickly attracted serious interest. Nottingham Forest tested Spurs’ resolve with a £38m bid that was rejected, while Aston Villa and Chelsea also circled.

Despite the noise, Bergvall has barely featured. He has played only 45 minutes of Premier League football for Spurs this season. Yet inside the club, belief in his ceiling has never really dipped.

Now he has committed to stay.

“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” Bergvall said after the deal was announced. He spoke like a player resetting his story, not one reluctantly tied down.

“I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

Those words mark a striking contrast to the uncertainty of early summer. Back then, De Zerbi was blunt. He called Bergvall “a top, top, top player” but refused to beg him to stay, insisting he would not try to “convince anyone to stay” against their wishes.

The Italian also looked inward. He admitted he had made mistakes in his handling of the midfielder during a chaotic run-in, a period in which Spurs only just escaped relegation. It was a messy backdrop for a young player trying to break through.

Now the tone is different. The coach sees a long-term pillar rather than a short-term headache.

Speaking after the renewal, De Zerbi said: “I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential.”

The platform is there. The question now is whether Bergvall’s change of heart becomes the turning point of his Tottenham career.
