Liverpool in Talks with Valencia for Harvey Elliott Loan

Liverpool are in talks with Valencia over a loan move for Harvey Elliott as the transfer window ticks towards Tuesday night’s deadline.

The 23-year-old, who has attracted interest from several clubs over the summer, is now the subject of serious negotiations with the La Liga side, who are pushing to get a deal done before the 11pm cut-off on September 1.

Elliott is understood to have already spoken with Valencia head coach Carlos Corberan about his prospective role at Mestalla. The proposed move is a straight loan, but it could pave the way for Liverpool to extend his contract to protect their asset, with his current deal running until the summer of 2028.

He has not featured in a single match-day squad under new Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola this season. That lack of involvement comes after a frustrating spell at Aston Villa last term, where he spent most of the campaign on the fringes.

His situation was complicated early last season. A brief late cameo in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at Newcastle 12 months ago meant he had already represented two clubs, blocking any further move in the January window under FIFA regulations.

Villa, wary of triggering an obligation to buy, kept a tight rein on his minutes. The Midlands club had a clause that would have turned the deal permanent for £35m once he hit 10 appearances, and they made sure he stayed short of that mark. While Unai Emery’s side went on to lift the Europa League, Elliott watched most of it from the sidelines.

Back at Liverpool for the pre-season tour of the United States, Elliott admitted in New York after a 1-0 win over Wrexham on July 30 that his future was unclear under Iraola.

“I think I need to be more kind of cautious of my decisions," he said. “Ultimately, I'm still wanting to be selfish, within that aspect of doing what's right for me, and whether I'm staying here and fighting for my place, or whether that's potentially going elsewhere, I'm still unsure at this moment in time until I get some more intel."

Liverpool had been expecting Valencia to firm up their interest before the weekend. Those conversations have now moved into direct talks over a loan agreement as the clock runs down.

Elliott, a boyhood Liverpool supporter, joined from Fulham in the summer of 2019 and has made 149 appearances for the club. The next one may have to wait — and it could depend on what happens in the final frantic hours of this window.
