Liverpool Transfer Window: Elliott Nears Valencia Move
Liverpool’s transfer window is creaking towards its deadline with more questions than answers – and two high‑profile attackers edging towards the exit.
Elliott pushes for Valencia switch
Harvey Elliott, once tipped as a long-term Anfield cornerstone, is now on the brink of a move to Valencia.
After a flat loan spell at Aston Villa last season, the midfielder has slipped further down the Liverpool hierarchy. With minutes looking scarce under Andoni Iraola, the 21-year-old is actively seeking a reset – and has already taken matters into his own hands.
Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto revealed that Valencia are closing in on Elliott, describing negotiations as “very advanced” and confirming the deal is set to be a loan. Moretto added that Elliott has already spoken directly with Iraola and asked to join the La Liga side, underlining how keen he is to make the move.
The story has now been backed up by Fabrizio Romano, who reports that Elliott has agreed personal terms with Valencia after “positive talks”. The focus now is on Liverpool and Valencia striking an agreement at club level to finalise the loan.
Romano had earlier confirmed that Valencia had made an official approach and that Elliott had three proposals on the table, with the Spanish club working to “beat competition” in talks with the player’s camp and Liverpool.
If completed, Elliott’s departure would be another dent in an already thin squad.
Barcola in, but squad still stretched
Liverpool’s summer has lurched between ambition and anxiety.
Their long chase of Bradley Barcola has finally delivered, with the PSG winger set to join for £100m plus add-ons. Barcola will become the club’s fourth signing of the window after Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz.
It’s a major outlay, a statement move. But it doesn’t disguise the reality: Iraola is still working with a small group, and the club still arguably need at least one more forward, a midfielder and possibly a right-back before the window shuts next week.
As new faces arrive, more exits are being lined up. Elliott looks like the first significant attacking departure. Cody Gakpo could be next.
Man City step up Gakpo pursuit
Across the North West, Manchester City are circling.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke has told Football Insider that City are “pushing to agree a deal” for Gakpo, describing the Dutchman as their “top target” after the departures of Savinho and Omar Marmoush left Pep Guardiola’s side lighter in attacking areas.
O’Rourke admitted the move would raise eyebrows, calling it “a surprise that City are actively considering a move for Cody Gakpo”, but underlined why the champions are in the market: they need reinforcements, and quickly.
Gakpo has long been tracked by Tottenham during this window, with Spurs showing the “most concrete interest” in the Netherlands international. Now City have entered the race with serious intent, the dynamic shifts again.
Liverpool, already scrambling to plug gaps and integrate expensive new signings, may soon have to decide whether they can afford to lose another forward – or whether the money and the player’s wishes will force their hand in the final days of a chaotic window.
