Liverpool's Transfer Window Sparks to Life with Key Deals
Liverpool’s quiet window has suddenly sparked into life, with Andoni Iraola pushing through a second deal in the space of a few hours as the transfer deadline looms on Tuesday.
The club’s focus has been clear for days: find a new left-sided attacker to step into the void left by Mohamed Salah. Bradley Barcola has emerged as the leading option, with talks described last week as progressing quickly and a deal targeted before the window slams shut.
Ismaila Sarr has also entered the frame as a secondary wide option, his name surfacing around the time of Saturday’s draw with Nottingham Forest. Iraola wants pace and threat on the flanks, and he wants it urgently.
But Liverpool’s late scramble is not just about the wings.
On Monday, reports surfaced that Liverpool had agreed a £30 million deal with Genk for goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans, a significant outlay in a position that already looked relatively settled. It signalled something important: this is a squad being reshaped with both the present and the long term in mind.
That intent has now been underlined again. According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Saint-Etienne striker Djylian N'Guessan, adding another highly rated teenager to the club’s growing pool of prospects.
The 18-year-old has been granted permission to undergo a medical ahead of the deadline, with plans already in place for him to join up with the Liverpool squad in the summer of 2027. Saint-Etienne, whose contract with N’Guessan runs out next summer, had already “opened the door” to his departure, as reported by Foot Mercato, clearing the path for Liverpool to move.
It is a deal that fits a clear pattern. Anfield has become a magnet for emerging talent, with recruitment increasingly split between immediate first-team upgrades and carefully plotted moves for the future. N’Guessan is firmly in that second category, a bet on what he might become rather than what he can offer tomorrow.
Iraola has been open about his priorities, but he has also hinted there was more going on behind the scenes than just the chase for a winger.
“In the end there are certain things that you can do, certain things that we don’t know if we can do,” he said when pressed on Liverpool’s plans. “It’s true that the priority has been to strengthen in the wide areas. Still we have four, five days, I’m sure if we can improve other areas, we will, but I don’t know how the market is going to finish.
“I cannot tell you. I have to be patient, the same as you. I want to know, believe me. It’s very uncomfortable for me. You are dealing with uncertainties all the time.”
Those uncertainties are now turning into decisions. A new goalkeeper agreed. A teenage striker lined up for 2027. Two winger pursuits still live as the clock ticks down.
Liverpool’s window, once labelled “relatively quiet”, suddenly carries a different energy. The only question now is how bold Iraola is prepared to be before that deadline finally cuts him off.
