Liverpool Target Lamine Camara Ahead of January Transfer
Liverpool are circling Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara ahead of the January window, with journalist Pete O'Rourke reporting that the club see themselves in a strong position to strike a deal for the French-based talent.
The 22-year-old has forced his way onto plenty of shortlists. Last season, Camara put together a quietly outstanding campaign in Ligue 1, stitching Monaco’s midfield together with energy and end product. He finished with three goals and four assists across 31 appearances in all competitions – solid numbers for a central midfielder whose game is built first on control and aggression rather than pure flair in the final third.
Those performances have pushed him into the conversation as one of the most gifted central midfielders currently operating in France. Liverpool have noticed. Their recruitment team are tracking him closely as they weigh up a winter move to bolster Andoni Iraola’s options in the middle of the pitch.
There is a catch. Camara is tied to Monaco until the summer of 2029. That long contract hands the French club all the leverage and all but rules out any notion of a bargain fee in January. If Liverpool want him now, they will almost certainly have to pay for the privilege.
On the pitch, the profile fits. Camara tackles aggressively and times his interventions well, often stepping in early to snuff out danger and flip possession in his side’s favour. When he wins it, he doesn’t overcomplicate things, happy to clear his lines when required but also capable of driving play forward and contributing with key passes and late runs into the box.
Primarily, he operates as a box-to-box midfielder, covering ground, linking phases, and offering himself as an outlet in both directions. He can also sit deeper as a defensive midfielder when asked, screening the back line and breaking up play, which adds a layer of tactical flexibility any elite coach craves.
The question sits where it so often does: can he handle the Premier League? The speed, the physical collisions, the relentless tempo – all of it would test a player stepping out of Ligue 1. Liverpool would be betting that his athleticism and reading of the game translate quickly under Iraola’s demanding style.
If they do, the upside is obvious. Camara has the quality to push for a regular starting role at Anfield rather than simply padding out the squad. At 22, he still has room to grow, and that development curve could run in parallel with Liverpool’s attempts to compete on multiple fronts over the coming seasons.
For Liverpool, it becomes a calculation of timing and price. Camara looks a smart target for January, but only if Monaco’s demands leave enough room for value in a market where everyone now knows how highly he is rated.
