Liverpool's Rebuild: Calvin Ramsay's Exit and Winger Pursuits

Liverpool’s summer rebuild is still crackling with activity – but one defender has already been handed his exit route.

Liverpool weigh up big-money winger moves

At the top end of the pitch, Liverpool are deep in talks for Bradley Barcola and Yankuba Minteh, yet the numbers on the table are eye-watering.

Barcola is being priced at around £120 million, according to multiple reports, as Paris Saint-Germain prepare for the 23-year-old’s possible departure. Brighton, sensing the market, are pushing hard on Minteh’s valuation as well. Their asking price for the 22-year-old has climbed to £80 million and, inside the club, there is growing confidence they can hold that line.

Whether Richard Hughes is willing to play at those levels is another matter. Liverpool’s new sporting director may decide to walk away rather than smash through those figures, even for targets they rate highly.

At the same time, the outgoing door at Anfield is busy. Stefan Bajcetic, Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott are all set to move on as the 2024/25 Premier League champions reshape the squad around Arne Slot’s ideas.

Ramsay’s Anfield chapter winds down

One decision has already been rubber-stamped. Calvin Ramsay will spend the 2026/27 season on loan at St Mirren, a move that all but ends his Liverpool career.

Ramsay arrived from Aberdeen in 2022 for a little over £4 million, a highly rated young full-back with a clear pathway in mind. That pathway never really opened up. Injuries and competition bit hard, and Liverpool sent him out on a series of loans – Preston, Bolton, Wigan, Kilmarnock – in search of rhythm and minutes.

For many supporters, his swift discard under Slot jarred, especially after Liverpool’s struggles at right-back last season. A position of need, a young international in-house, and yet the door closed quickly.

Now 23, Ramsay gets something more valuable than promises: games. St Mirren manager Craig McLeish has already gone public with his admiration, calling the defender’s talents “exceptional” and framing this as a pivotal campaign.

"It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group," McLeish told BBC Sport.

Liverpool’s stance is clear. With Ramsay under contract until 2027, they have chosen to let him see out that deal on loan elsewhere rather than reintegrate him. That effectively turns this St Mirren spell into a shop window for the Scotland international, who will aim to convince future suitors across a full season in the Scottish Premiership.

He departs Anfield having broken through under Jurgen Klopp, but only briefly – four senior appearances in total. Now the rebuild continues without him, as Liverpool chase nine-figure wingers while a once-promising full-back fights to prove he still belongs at the top level.
