Liverpool Pursue Patrik Farkas Amid Midfield Uncertainty
Liverpool’s search for midfield reinforcements has taken a clearer shape, with Patrik Farkas now firmly on the club’s radar and very much in the building.
The Hungarian U18 international, currently a free agent, has been spotted around Liverpool’s U21 set-up at the AXA Training Centre, with Anfield Watch reporting that negotiations over a deal are at an advanced stage. For a low-key youth signing, this one suddenly has a very visible trail.
Farkas in the frame
Anfield Watch report that Liverpool are “in advanced talks to sign Patrik Farkas as a free agent”, with the youngster already involved in U21 games. When a trialist or potential signing starts featuring at that level, it usually signals that discussions have moved beyond the exploratory phase.
Farkas, described as the older brother of Erik Farkas, was also “spotted in the background of one of the images Liverpool released from their latest game at the U21 AXA centre.” On its own, a blurred figure in a club photo might feel trivial. Set against the backdrop of ongoing talks, it reads very differently – a hint that Liverpool are edging towards an agreement.
As Anfield Watch frame it: “That’s a strong indication that the talks are advancing as hoped.”
If the deal goes through, Farkas would deepen Liverpool’s growing Hungarian connection. He would join a group that already includes Erik Farkas, Armin Pecsi, Milos Kerkez and Dominik Szoboszlai, underlining the club’s increasing interest in that particular market.
A midfield in flux
The timing of this move is not accidental. Liverpool’s midfield picture is anything but settled, and the uncertainty sits at senior level, not in the academy.
Curtis Jones has drawn firm interest from Inter Milan, with approaches already turned away. Alexis Mac Allister, a central pillar of the current side, continues to attract admiring glances from major European clubs.
The concern is spelled out bluntly in the original reporting. “Losing either player would be a significant blow.” Then the sharper line: “Losing both would leave Liverpool with a serious problem.” That is the scenario Liverpool’s recruitment team are working to avoid as they try to balance immediate competitiveness with longer-term planning.
Inter’s pursuit of Jones has not disappeared, even if Liverpool’s stance has so far been to keep him. Mac Allister, meanwhile, has reportedly been watched by Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and now Manchester City. Interest does not always turn into bids, but when that calibre of club tracks a player, it forces internal conversations.
A smart move – but not the whole answer
From a Liverpool perspective, the Farkas story carries two strands: optimism and unease.
On the positive side, it shows the club are still scanning the market aggressively, willing to move early on young talent before competition stiffens. If Farkas is already trusted to feature around the U21s and talks are genuinely advanced, there is a clear logic to tying him down quickly.
At the same time, the noise around Jones and Mac Allister refuses to fade. Even if neither departs, the constant speculation breeds uncertainty among supporters who know how thin the margins are in midfield. Quality is there. Depth and role balance are another matter entirely.
So Farkas looks like a sharp, developmental addition and one to monitor closely. But for Liverpool fans, he sits inside a much larger question: can the club protect its core midfield and still evolve it fast enough to match their ambitions this season?
