Liverpool Pursue Lille Winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo
Liverpool have stepped up their late-window search for attacking reinforcements by making enquiries for Lille winger Matias Fernandez-Pardo, according to a reputable source on X.
The Merseyside club are understood to have made contact on Wednesday, testing the waters over a possible move for the Belgian international as the clock ticks down on the summer window. Newcastle United, who have been working on a deal for Fernandez-Pardo, now face the prospect of Liverpool muscling in on their target.
Liverpool eye versatile threat
This is not a straightforward hunt for “just another winger”. Fernandez-Pardo offers something more complex and, crucially for Liverpool, more flexible.
The 21-year-old has built a reputation at Gent and Lille as a wide forward who can just as comfortably operate through the middle. His senior appearances show a player used across the frontline, not tied to the touchline. That versatility immediately makes him an intriguing solution for a Liverpool squad preparing to cope without a recognised centre-forward for stretches of the 2026/27 campaign, with Hugo Ekitike expected to carry much of the load.
Liverpool’s recruitment team have been scouring the market for wide options, but prising attackers from Premier League rivals has proved difficult. Fernandez-Pardo, already established in Ligue 1 and with international experience for Belgium, offers a different route.
Creator more than killer
The numbers paint a clear picture. Fernandez-Pardo is not a penalty-box predator in the mould of Alexander Isak. He does not profile as a ruthless, high-volume finisher.
What he does offer is service.
His Ligue 1 data with Lille points towards a facilitator, a player who can knit attacks together from the flanks and supply the central striker. In Newcastle’s plans, that would mean feeding Isak. In Liverpool’s, it could mean supporting Ekitike and easing the creative burden on the existing forward line.
That distinction matters. Any move from Liverpool would be about adding craft and flexibility rather than guaranteeing 20 goals a season.
Left-sided… but is that enough?
One question hangs over the pursuit. If Liverpool are targeting Fernandez-Pardo primarily for the left flank, the deal only truly makes sense if they believe he can be equally effective on the right.
Liverpool’s need is not limited to one side. With the club already deep in talks with PSG over Bradley Barcola, committing significant resources to another predominantly left-sided winger would raise obvious tactical and strategic questions.
Unless there is a sudden change of direction on Barcola, or a firm belief inside Liverpool’s recruitment department that Fernandez-Pardo can mirror his output on the opposite wing, the move would represent a bold reshaping of the attacking options.
For now, Liverpool have made their calls. Newcastle’s long-running interest has been noted. The next few days will reveal whether this is a genuine hijack in the making or just a sharp reminder that, late in the window, no transfer race is ever truly settled.
