Liverpool's Midfield Search: No Move for Matias Orozco
Liverpool’s search for midfield steel will not lead them to Colombia’s latest prodigy, with Matias Orozco effectively ruled out as an Anfield option.
The club’s reshaped era under Andoni Iraola has begun in stuttering fashion. A late rescue act at St. James’ Park brought a point against Newcastle United, but it did little to calm the noise around the spine of this Liverpool side. The defensive midfield remains under scrutiny, questions hang over marquee signing Florian Wirtz, and both full-backs have come under the microscope. Yet the recruitment focus continues to tilt towards wide areas.
Yankuba Minteh is close to arriving, Bradley Barcola has been tracked all window, and the suggestion was that a wonderkid holding midfielder might follow. That idea has been firmly cooled.
Carragher calls out Liverpool’s midfield balance
Jamie Carragher did not sugarcoat his assessment of Liverpool’s opening weekend draw. The former defender tore into the structure of the midfield, singling out Ryan Gravenberch’s positioning and questioning whether Dominik Szoboszlai can truly operate in a disciplined double pivot.
“I think Liverpool do need someone alongside Gravenberch,” Carragher said, stressing that the solution is not just a destroyer who shies away from the ball. He argued that any midfielder at Liverpool’s level must be comfortable taking possession under pressure, but he wants a runner in there – a player who can cover ground and protect – and pushed the idea that Szoboszlai belongs higher up, in the no.10 role.
On paper, Orozco looked like the kind of deep-lying playmaker who could grow into that brief. On the market, he is not Liverpool’s answer.
‘Zero per cent’ chance of Anfield move
Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra has poured cold water on the speculation, stating that Liverpool have a “zero per cent chance” of signing the teenager. That line effectively ends talk of Orozco heading to Merseyside in this window.
The Barranquilla-born midfielder broke through at Deportivo Cali last season, quickly earning a reputation in Colombia as a composed, deep-lying organiser. Local outlet VBar Caracol went as far as to report that the 18-year-old was close to sealing a move to Liverpool, fuelling excitement around a rapid leap to the Premier League.
That narrative has now been checked. The early noise around Anfield looks premature, even if the level of interest from England remains high.
Premier League queue forms for Colombian starlet
If Liverpool are stepping back, others are not. Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Everton, Aston Villa, Fulham and Manchester City have all been mentioned as admirers of Orozco, who is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about young midfielders in South America.
City, fresh from tying up a deal for Palmeiras winger Allen, are clearly not slowing their pursuit of emerging South American talent. Orozco fits the same profile: young, technically polished, and available before his value explodes in Europe.
Leeds United and Brentford have also been floated as potential landing spots, underlining how widely he has been scouted across the English pyramid.
For Liverpool, the message is blunt: there will be no late swoop, no hidden move in the background. The search for that elusive midfield runner, the partner Carragher insists Gravenberch needs, will have to look elsewhere.
