Liverpool Consider €50 Million Move for Finn Jeltsch

Liverpool are weighing up a €50 million move that could shape their defence for the next decade – but also deepen an already bold gamble on youth.

Centre-back puzzle for 2027

The club’s long-term planning for 2027 is already under way, and the picture at the back is anything but settled. The squad inherited from Richard Hughes has obvious gaps, and centre-back sits right near the top of the to-do list.

On paper, Liverpool look stocked. Five senior central defenders are on the books. Scratch the surface, though, and every single one comes with a question mark.

Virgil van Dijk is out of contract next summer. Joe Gomez is in the same position. Ronald Araujo is only at Anfield on loan and would cost €50m to keep permanently.

Strip those away and the future suddenly looks thin. Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are the only centre-backs guaranteed to be at the club beyond this season. Neither is an established Premier League presence. Jacquet, the older of the two at 21, is returning from shoulder surgery. Leoni, just 19, has been sidelined for around a year with a serious knee injury.

That is the defensive platform Liverpool are trying to build from. No wonder the recruitment team is already scanning the 2027 market.

Liverpool eye Finn Jeltsch

One name has moved firmly onto the radar. According to TuttoJuve, Liverpool are among the clubs tracking Finn Jeltsch ahead of a possible move from Stuttgart next year.

At 19, Jeltsch has just put together a breakout season in the Bundesliga. He was one of only 14 teenage centre-backs to log at least 1,000 minutes across Europe’s top five leagues last season. Push the bar up to 1,500 minutes and the pool shrinks to 10 – with Jeltsch rated around the fifth-best of that group by the Value Adder model.

Numbers like that explain Stuttgart’s stance. They have no intention of letting him go on the cheap. The reported price is €50m, and interest is already heavy. Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are all said to be monitoring the situation. This will not be a quiet auction.

So Liverpool are in the fight. The question is whether they truly commit.

Risk or opportunity?

On talent alone, Jeltsch fits the profile: young, high ceiling, already tested in a major league. But he would be another 20-year-old centre-back added to a group that is already strikingly green.

Right now, the only centre-backs certain to be at Anfield beyond this season have an average age of 20. Throwing another 20-year-old into that mix in 2027 would be a radical bet on potential over experience.

From one angle, it looks reckless. From another, it looks like a club trying to get ahead of the market, piling into a price bracket where they believe the value lies.

Either way, this is not a straightforward decision. Liverpool admire Finn Jeltsch. Half of Europe does. Whether they are prepared to stake another big fee on youth at the heart of their defence will tell plenty about where this new era is heading.

For now, it’s one to watch – and a test of how brave Liverpool really want to be.
