Liverpool’s defensive rebuild may not be finished with Ronald Araújo.

The club is still light across the back line, and as the transfer window drifts into its volatile final stretch, one name has emerged from Barcelona again: Jules Koundé.

Araújo deal shows new Liverpool intent

Liverpool has already taken advantage of the chaos in Catalonia. Araújo’s loan from Barcelona materialised only when Hansi Flick made it clear the Uruguayan was no longer central to his plans for the new season.

A few weeks earlier, Araújo expected to stay at Camp Nou for the long haul. Then the conversation changed, and so did his future. He pushed for a move, Liverpool moved quickly, and a season-long loan was sealed.

For the Reds, it plugged an obvious hole. Centre-back has been a glaring issue, and Araújo brings authority there, along with the ability to slot in at right-back when required.

That last part matters. A lot.

Conor Bradley’s long-term injury and Jeremie Frimpong’s recurring fitness problems have left Liverpool exposed on the right. Araújo can cover the flank, but everyone at Anfield knows that’s a stopgap, not a plan. The club still lacks a nailed-on, long-term solution at right-back.

Koundé enters the frame

This is where Barcelona could come back into focus. According to Mundo Deportivo, Koundé may be available before the window shuts, opening the door to a second raid on the Blaugrana.

Liverpool has been named among the interested clubs, with Manchester City and Arsenal also in the conversation. For any of them, Koundé offers something rare: a defender who can lock down the right side and still step comfortably into the heart of defence.

The French international has largely operated at right-back for Barcelona, but his pedigree at centre-back is well established. Since joining from Sevilla, he has become a regular presence, trusted across multiple seasons and systems.

At 27, he is in his peak years. His blend of athleticism, timing and aggression has made him a natural fit for a high-pressing game, a key reason he has been so heavily used under Flick. That same intensity would translate smoothly to Liverpool under Andoni Iraola, whose approach demands defenders who can defend big spaces and compete relentlessly.

Flick’s assessment earlier this year captured Koundé’s appeal in a few sharp lines: “Jules is a fighter. He’s always focused. We’re all human, and sometimes you don’t have your best day, but he’s always fighting. Even when things don’t start well. I appreciate what he’s doing. He has a top-notch mentality.”

That is exactly the profile Liverpool has been targeting: technically strong, tactically flexible, and mentally hardened.

Big fit, big question

On paper, Koundé ticks almost every box for Liverpool’s back line, both now and for the seasons ahead. He could stabilise right-back, reinforce centre-back and align perfectly with the club’s evolving identity under Iraola.

The question is not whether he fits. It’s whether Liverpool moves.

With other positions still under review and the clock ticking on the window, the club may prioritise elsewhere before committing to a major right-back addition. The opportunity, though, is there.

If Barcelona really are open to talks, Liverpool has a decision to make: double down on the Nou Camp, or risk watching a tailor-made solution walk into a rival’s back four.
