Lion City Sailors Fire Coach Jesus Casas Before SPL Season Opener
SINGAPORE – Lion City Sailors have axed head coach Jesus Casas just five days before they open the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) campaign against Tampines Rovers in the Community Shield.
The club confirmed his departure on Sept 1 with a stark, 30-word statement on Facebook, announcing that assistant coach Varo Moreno will take charge of the first team until further notice.
No fanfare. No farewell. Just a clean break.
Casas’ exit comes barely seven months after his arrival. The former Iraq coach, who cut his teeth in several youth roles in Spain before serving as Javi Gracia’s assistant at Watford in early 2018, was appointed by the Sailors in February.
He did not come on a short-term deal either. The Sailors had handed the 52-year-old a contract running until the end of the 2027-28 season, a clear signal then that they saw him as a long-term architect of their project.
That vision has been ripped up before he has even led them into a new league campaign.
Casas had been on the radar in this region for some time. He previously made the shortlist for the Singapore national team job, which eventually went to Gavin Lee. His name has also been circulating in Asia again in recent weeks.
The Korea Herald recently reported that Casas had applied for the vacant South Korea national team post and that he was one of three candidates on the final shortlist. Against that backdrop, his sudden departure from the Sailors will only fuel speculation about his next move.
He had arrived in Singapore as the replacement for Serbian coach Aleksandar Rankovic, who was sacked on Feb 6, a day after the Sailors slumped to a 2-0 home defeat by Cambodian side Svay Rieng in the Asean Club Championship.
Rankovic’s tenure had been a paradox. He delivered silverware – guiding the Sailors to the Singapore Cup for the third time during a 2½-year spell that also brought an SPL title – but he also presided over a group-stage exit in Asian Champions League Two, a competition in which the club had enjoyed a dream run to the final just a season earlier.
The Sailors have not been shy about making hard calls in pursuit of regional success. Casas is now the latest high-profile casualty of those ambitions.
On the domestic front, the team remain the standard-bearers. On May 3, they clinched back-to-back SPL titles for the first time in their history with a 0-0 draw against Tampines Rovers, finishing the season two points clear of the Stags.
Now, the same opponents stand in their way again.

The Sailors and Tampines meet on Sept 6 at Jalan Besar Stadium in the Community Shield, the traditional curtain-raiser for the 2026-27 season, with kick-off at 7.30pm. Moreno will lead the champions out, thrust from the shadows of the backroom into the heat of a season opener against their closest domestic challengers.
There is little time for adjustment. After the Shield, the Sailors begin their SPL title defence on Sept 12 against Hougang United at Bishan Stadium, also at 7.30pm.
