Leeds United Appeal Over Goalscorer Identity After 4-1 Win

Leeds United have taken the unusual step of appealing over the identity of their second goalscorer in Monday night’s 4-1 win against Newcastle United.

The flashpoint comes from the 34th minute at Elland Road. James Justin whipped in a cross from the right, Dominic Calvert-Lewin attacked it and wheeled away believing he had headed Leeds into a 2-0 lead. The stadium announcer, the crowd, even the striker himself seemed convinced it was his.

Not for long.

After a closer look, officials ruled that Jayden Bogle had the final touch, and the goal was officially switched to the defender. Calvert-Lewin, who later did get on the scoresheet with Leeds’ third in first-half stoppage time, was left stunned when the referee informed him the strike had been credited to his team-mate instead.

The Premier League match centre later confirmed on X that the “goal accreditation panel adjudged Leeds' 34th minute goal as a Bogle goal”, underlining the decision that left the forward looking bewildered despite the comfortable victory.

Leeds have now challenged that call. A second, separate panel will be convened to review the incident again and decide who will be officially awarded the goal.

The scoreline will not change. The record books might.
