Kobbie Mainoo steals the show as £150m United rebuild looks to its own
Manchester United have thrown £150m at their midfield this summer. On Sunday, the best player in that area of the pitch cost them nothing at all.
Kobbie Mainoo, straight from the academy pitches of Cheadle and Stockport, ran the game in United’s 5-2 dismantling of Ipswich at Old Trafford, a performance that had Harry Maguire purring.
The 21-year-old’s all‑round display – on and off the ball – cut through the swirl of new signings and big fees. While the club paraded their expensive overhaul, it was the homegrown midfielder who dictated tempo, snapped into duels and looked as if he had never been away.
Maguire, watching much of Mainoo’s work unfold in front of him, did not hold back.
“I thought he was brilliant, Kobbie,” the defender said. “To say he hasn’t played for I don’t know how long – not really got many minutes in pre-season and things like that, he was magnificent. He put a great shift in and I think his work without the ball has improved so much since Michael [Carrick, the manager] has been in.”
The praise did not stop there. Maguire highlighted the edge that has crept into Mainoo’s game, the aggression to go with the composure.
“That’s probably credit to Michael and his staff. But I think without the ball now, he’s becoming a real monster in there, and he wins a lot of second balls. He wins a lot of duels. You won’t want to play against him in there and that’s the biggest compliment I can give to him from playing and watching him behind.”
United’s recruitment drive has been framed as a necessary reset of a malfunctioning midfield. Yet Mainoo’s emergence – and now, his dominance in games like this – offers something money cannot easily buy: continuity, identity, and the sense that the club’s pathway from academy to first team still matters.
Maguire, who knows all about the swings of form and fortune at Old Trafford, sounded a note of realism around a player still at the start of his career.
“He’s so young, if we want him to play for this club for another 10 years, there’s going to be times where he’s going to go through a patch like with Rashy and myself, but that’s part and parcel,” he said. “I think he’s really level-headed, he’s really composed, he has great belief in his ability and, he’s going to be a magnificent play for this club for many, many years.”
United’s summer has been defined by chequebook statements. Against Ipswich, the loudest message came from a midfielder who cost them nothing and might just be priceless if he keeps playing like this.
