Juventus Goalkeeping Duel: Vicario vs Grabara

Juventus reset their goalkeeping hierarchy this summer and walked straight into a duel.

Michele Di Gregorio and Mattia Perin were moved on, clearing the way for a complete overhaul of the position. In their place came two loans: Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham and Kamil Grabara from Wolfsburg. Both had been tracked for a while. Both arrived with the clear message that the gloves are up for grabs.

For now, Vicario stands in front of the line.

The Italian has started well in Turin, justifying the initial decision to hand him the No. 1 role. His presence is calm, his handling solid, and he has not given Luciano Spalletti an obvious reason to rethink the pecking order.

But no one at Juventus is pretending this is settled.

Spalletti showed last season that he is perfectly willing to rotate goalkeepers and make big calls. Reputation does not shield anyone. If Vicario’s standards dip, Grabara is not there to watch; he is there to step in. The Polish keeper arrives with a strong résumé of his own and a clear belief he belongs at this level.

That edge is exactly what Juventus wanted.

Both keepers know their place is never guaranteed, and that tension sharpens every training session. Spalletti can now pick his goalkeeper not just on form, but on the specific demands of each match, knowing there is a high-level alternative ready if the starter falters.

Vicario himself has embraced the contest rather than shying away from it. Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, the Tottenham loanee highlighted the respect underpinning the rivalry and singled out Grabara’s past exploits.

“We all know each other more or less, I remember his great season in the Champions League with Copenhagen. He's a strong, quality goalkeeper. There's healthy competition between us, as it should be,” he said.

Those words matter. They paint a picture of a dressing room where competition is fierce but not toxic, where two ambitious goalkeepers push each other instead of pulling each other down.

Vicario wants to remain Spalletti’s first choice. Grabara intends to change his mind. Juventus, caught in the middle, stand to gain from every save, every training-ground dive, every small mistake that raises the stakes again.

This battle is only just beginning, and it will run right through the season.
