During Atletico's 2026-27 season opener against Villarreal on August 23, Alvarez was met with loud boos and whistles from home supporters both before kickoff and when he entered the pitch as a substitute for the last 24 minutes. After the match ended in a 2-2 draw, the team joined fans in applause but Alvarez was notably excluded, with footage showing a staff member directing him away from the group. Coach Diego Simeone later confirmed this separation.
The hostile reception highlights how strained Alvarez’s relationship with the Atletico fanbase has become, making his presence increasingly uncomfortable. Barcelona’s Persistent Interest and Atletico’s Resistance
The transfer saga surrounding Alvarez has been ongoing all summer. Reports suggest Barcelona have actively sought his signing well before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but Atletico’s leadership remains firm. CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin stated in July that the club wants to keep Alvarez and rejected offers even up to €200 million, emphasizing that any proposal below his high release clause would be refused.
"My opinion is clear, the club's will is clear... we want to keep him," said Gil Marin. "We didn't accept the €100 million offer, nor will we accept one of €150 million or €200 million."
Nevertheless, Alvarez and his camp are pushing hard for a transfer. The striker told ESPN during the World Cup that moving on was the best option for him. Just a day before the Villarreal game, Gil Marin claimed Atletico was still supporting Alvarez's development but criticized the player's advisors. Alvarez’s agent responded sharply on social media, implying distrust.
The tension between the clubs escalated further on August 26 when Barcelona president Joan Laporta expressed hope for completing the signing, only for Atletico to respond with a statement ruling out any sale to their La Liga rival, citing dignity over money.
