Julian Alvarez's Tension with Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid
The mood at the Metropolitano has curdled. What was once the home of Diego Simeone’s fiercest battles has turned its anger inward, and at the centre of the storm stands Julian Alvarez.
Reports in Spain describe Simeone as “absolutely furious” with the Argentine striker, whose name has been dragged ever closer to a sensational move to Barcelona. For a coach who has spent the last year defending him at every turn, the feeling inside Atletico Madrid is one of betrayal.
La Liga commentator Phil Kitromilides laid bare the depth of the rift when speaking to CBS Sports.
“What I’m hearing is that the dressing room is very, very disappointed with him,” he said. “And what I’ve been told by someone who knows the situation is that Diego Simeone can’t even look at him. Like, Diego Simeone is furious, absolutely furious with Julian Alvarez. And rightly so.”
This is not just about a transfer link. It’s about everything that came before it.
Simeone stood by Alvarez through a brutal four‑month goal drought last season, when doubts swirled outside but never from the bench. While others questioned whether the former Manchester City forward could carry a top side, his manager never flinched. Inside the club, Alvarez was treated as the centrepiece, the man around whom the next version of Atletico would be built.
Kitromilides underlined that sense of personal investment.
“This is his guy, this is someone who he defended publicly, consistently, last season, when Alvarez went nearly four months without scoring,” he said. “He was never questioned by Simeone, never a bad word from Simeone, constantly backed and supported 100 per cent. This is their most important player, their franchise player. The whole project is built around Julian Alvarez.”
That is why the current situation cuts so deep.
Alvarez missed training sessions last week, a decision that only poured fuel on the rumours of a move to Camp Nou and heightened the feeling of fracture inside the dressing room. He did return to work with his teammates on Sunday, but the tension has not lifted. The forward is understood to be keen on the Barcelona switch; Atletico, though, are digging in.
The Madrid club are refusing to be bounced into a sale, aware of both Alvarez’s importance on the pitch and what his departure would symbolise off it. They want him back in line, back in the team, back focused on LaLiga.
Barcelona, for their part, have not hidden their admiration for the Argentina international. Yet reality bites. Within the Catalan hierarchy there is a recognition of how difficult it will be to prise Alvarez away in this window. The numbers, the timing, the resistance from Madrid – it all makes the deal a long shot.
So Barça are already pivoting. The Catalans are now closing in on a move for Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal, viewed as a more attainable solution to their need for attacking depth while the Alvarez saga drags on.
Inside Atletico, the message is one of forced calm. The club expect Alvarez to be named in the squad for the next fixture, a clear attempt to drag the situation back towards normality, at least in public. They know they cannot afford to leave their “franchise player” on the outside for long, even as Barcelona’s shadow lingers over every team sheet.
Officials are working hard to project control, to suggest this is a storm that can still be ridden out. On the record, the line remains optimistic, almost pointedly so.
Mateu Alemany summed up that stance: “The plan is very clear. We hope he’ll be back in the team quickly and available for the next LaLiga match.”
The plan might be clear. The dressing room mood is anything but. And as long as Barcelona hover and Simeone “can’t even look at him”, the real question is simple: can Atletico rebuild this relationship before the season tears it apart?
