Julian Alvarez’s return to the pitch for Atletico Madrid turned sour on Sunday, drowned out by whistles and wrapped in transfer intrigue.
The Argentina forward, back in the squad after a post-World Cup final break, was included in Diego Simeone’s matchday group for the 2-2 draw with Villarreal at the Metropolitano. He had sat out the midweek win over newly-promoted Malaga to work on his fitness. This was supposed to be the reintroduction. Instead, it felt like a parting.
He was booed when his name was read out before kick-off. The reaction didn’t soften. When Simeone sent him on just after the hour mark, with Atletico down to ten men and chasing the game, the whistles rose again from sections of the home crowd.

Simeone, speaking after the match, was quick to stress that this was not Alvarez turning his back on the fans of his own accord.
"The club staff told me that the club decided Julian should not go over with his teammates to greet the fans, and that it was not Julian’s decision,” the Atletico coach told reporters. “The club made the decision to keep him away and have him head to the dressing room.
"No, I’m not in a position to give advice to the fans. I think I need to focus on my work, which is to give my best on the sporting side for the good of Atletico de Madrid.
"The only thing I know is that if Atletico de Madrid wants to win a title, we have to be united. We need forwards, and we need important forwards. For that, of course, we all have to work in that direction to give the team what it needs.”
The backdrop is impossible to ignore. Alvarez has made no secret of his desire to join Barcelona this summer, pushing for a move that has never quite materialised. The LaLiga champions are now understood to be looking elsewhere, cooling their interest and leaving the striker in limbo.
That shift has cracked the door open for Arsenal. With the window ticking towards its deadline, the London club are being linked with a late move that would haul Alvarez back to the Premier League in what is being framed as a potential blockbuster deal.
So was this his last appearance in an Atletico shirt, whistled off and ushered down the tunnel by club orders? Or just another twist in a saga that refuses to die before the market finally shuts?
