Julian Alvarez Faces Hostile Reception at Atletico Madrid

Julian Alvarez’s return to Atletico Madrid turned toxic on Sunday, as the forward was drowned in jeers from his own supporters amid his push to leave the club.

The Argentinian, who wants out of the Spanish capital this summer, has been heavily linked with Premier League champions Arsenal and with Barcelona. Atletico’s stance, though, has been blunt: he is not for sale. The stand-off is now spilling onto the pitch – and into the stands.

All afternoon, the build-up circled around one question: would Alvarez feature in Atletico’s first home game of the season against Villarreal? When the team sheet dropped and his name appeared among the substitutes, it answered nothing about the relationship. It only set the stage.

The mood became clear the moment he started to warm up. Boos rolled down from the stands, a hostile soundtrack that only intensified as the minutes ticked by. When Diego Simeone finally sent him on in the 66th minute, the reaction was brutal. A wall of whistles and jeers greeted him as he crossed the white line.

Alvarez entered the game with the score level. Marc Pubill had fired Atletico ahead, only for Gerard Moreno to drag Villarreal back into it from the penalty spot just before the hour. The home side, already frustrated by the shift in momentum, turned their anger on the forward they believe wants out.
