Julián Álvarez Faces Deadline to Decide Between Atlético and Arsenal
Atlético Madrid have drawn a line in the sand. Julián Álvarez has until Sunday to decide: embrace a move to Arsenal, or stay put in the Spanish capital.
The Argentina forward is caught in the middle of a transfer saga that has taken a sharp turn. He has been told, repeatedly and in no uncertain terms by Atlético – both in public and behind closed doors – that he will not be joining Barcelona. That door is shut.
What remains open is far less clear in his own mind.
Those close to Álvarez describe him as “struggling” and “confused” by how the summer has unfolded. Despite Arsenal’s long-standing admiration and their status as Premier League champions, he has not yet shown any real willingness to push for a move to north London.
From Arsenal’s side, the stance is cold and calculated. As of Thursday, nothing had shifted. Inside the club, the feeling is that a deal is unlikely. Until Álvarez makes it obvious he wants to be part of Mikel Arteta’s plans, they are not preparing to sit down at a negotiating table. No green light from the player, no move from Arsenal.
In Spain, the mood music is similar. The longer Álvarez hesitates, the more those around the situation believe he will simply remain where he is. Time, for now, is working in Atlético’s favour.
Simeone leaves Álvarez out as CEO lays bare the turmoil
On the pitch, the consequences are already visible. Diego Simeone has confirmed Álvarez will not feature against Sevilla this weekend. The forward has not trained for the last three days and will be nowhere near the matchday squad.
Off the pitch, Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín offered a stark glimpse into the player’s mindset on Friday.
“[Julián] is really struggling. There were people who misled him, who left him confused, and the truth is that I deeply regret it,” he said.
“I know him, I've been working with him for some time, and he is a great person, a great professional and an excellent footballer.
“He is completely confused and, at the moment, he is going through a very difficult situation, both personally and professionally.”
It is rare for a senior club executive to speak so openly about a player’s emotional state. It underlines how messy this has become: a top-level forward, a heavyweight club, and a summer of mixed messages.
Arteta keeps his distance – but sends a message to his own squad
On the other side of Europe, Arteta is refusing to be dragged into the speculation. Asked directly on Thursday about Arsenal’s interest in the former Manchester City striker, he sidestepped any confirmation.
Instead, he turned the spotlight onto his own dressing room and how he handles transfer noise.
“Very simple. Whatever you read, if you have a question, come and knock on my door, and I will tell you whether it is true or not,” he said.
“Because a player in any position, if they read it, we could put a catalogue on the walls about all the players that we wanted in the last three months, and we would need the whole building.
“They know that there's so much speculation. So if ever they feel the doubt of what we think about them, and if we're going to recruit a player, I tell them straight away.
“And if we're going to sign somebody in their position, I normally tell them. I say: 'These are the plans and the reasons. We still believe in you, but the competition is going to increase'. I prefer to do it that way.”
The message is clear: Arsenal will act, and when they do, their players will not be left guessing. For now, though, Álvarez remains a name on the outside of the building rather than one on Arteta’s tactics board.
Premier League return or Atlético reset?
The bigger question hangs over Álvarez himself. What does he actually want?
South American football expert Tim Vickery, speaking on Sky Sports News, framed the dilemma in blunt terms.
“It is up to Atlético. They have two options: do they want to keep a player who doesn't want to be there? Or do they want to cash in?” he said.
“Clearly, they wouldn't sell to Barcelona and wouldn't sell to Real Madrid if they were interested. That does not leave them with many options; who else could afford him?
“The other options are in the Premier League. I'm not sure he was wildly happy during his time in England. He has got himself in a place where there are not many options.”
Arsenal, though, would offer a powerful storyline.
“Arsenal would give a fantastic narrative. Why not try to be part of the first Champions League at Arsenal?” Vickery added. “Why not be a part of that? And, depending on the terms of the contract, Arsenal could be a stepping stone to Barcelona. But it is up to Atlético.
“I am told that the fans would probably take him back if he has to go back to Atlético. He is a wonderful player, a striker with the soul of a midfielder.”
So the clock ticks towards Sunday. Atlético wait. Arsenal watch. And Julián Álvarez, caught between ambition, loyalty and uncertainty, must finally decide which path he wants his career to take next.
