Julian Alvarez Faces Decision as Arsenal Emerges Amid Barcelona Stalemate
Arsenal are circling. Julian Alvarez is running out of roads.
With the transfer window ticking into its final days, Fabrizio Romano insists there is one serious alternative left on the table for the Atletico Madrid forward after his Barcelona dream hit a brick wall: Arsenal.
Atletico slam the door on Barcelona
Alvarez has pushed hard for Barcelona all summer, a stance that has badly strained his relationship with Atletico Madrid and their supporters. He has been clear about his wish. Atletico have been even clearer with their response.
On Thursday, club CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin delivered a blistering public statement, making it plain that Barcelona are off limits while he remains in charge.
“The truth is that it outrages us even more; we are repulsed by the dishonesty, the lack of ethics, transparency and professionalism, and we can only insist that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances,” Gil Marin said.
“I have the support of everyone working with me, from shareholders to directors, and the only certain and firm decision is that we will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances. You have my word – the player [Alvarez] will most certainly not be transferred to Barcelona.”
That message did not soften after the Champions League draw. Gil Marin doubled down, stressing that as long as he is Atletico CEO, a move to Barcelona is to be “forgotten” — not just this window, but for the future as well.
Arsenal move into position
Into that stand-off steps Arsenal.
Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, underlined that this is no casual monitoring job from the Premier League side.
“I know I’ve been on this one for a few days and many of you don’t believe it but I keep telling you that Arsenal are there for Julian Alvarez. Arsenal are there. Arsenal are waiting. Arsenal have their own strategy, I think it’s a real strategy,” he said.
“It’s not that Arsenal are just there looking at the situation. Arsenal are in the background because obviously Arsenal need to respect the player, his family, his agents, the player decides. So Arsenal can only wait but at the same time, while they are waiting and while they are in the background, Arsenal are active in the conversations.”
According to Romano, Arsenal have already told Atletico they are ready to do business and try to reach an agreement if Alvarez gives the green light. The club’s recent sales — including Gabriel Martinelli, with the final fee expected to land somewhere between £50m and £60m — have opened up room to manoeuvre financially.
“This extra money after all the extra money generated by Arsenal in the recent months gives Arsenal space to make business for Julian Alvarez,” Romano explained. “So Arsenal will be ready to sit at the table with Atletico Madrid and to reach an agreement.”
Decision time for Alvarez
The stalemate now hinges on one person.
Romano stressed that, up to “today, tonight, the recent hours”, Alvarez has stuck firmly to one message: he only wants Barcelona, his “dream” remains Barcelona. Arsenal, though, are refusing to walk away. They wait, quietly but deliberately, as the days drain away.
Atletico’s stance on other suitors is far softer. Gil Marin has made it clear that if Alvarez does not want to stay in Madrid, there will be no deal with Barcelona, but the club are “open to finding a solution” elsewhere.
Romano’s reading of that line is blunt.
“Guys, the message from Atletico Madrid is very clear: if Julian wants to go to Arsenal please go. You are free to go,” he said. Atletico would prefer to keep him, give the relationship another chance, but they know Arsenal are ready if Alvarez formally asks to leave.
That leaves the Argentina international boxed in by his own ambition and his club’s hard line. Barcelona is blocked. Arsenal is open. The market is about to enter its frantic final stretch.
“Let’s see because this Arsenal scenario should not be underestimated,” Romano concluded.
With four or five days left, one phone call from Alvarez or his agent could flip the entire story. Does he cling to a dream that Atletico have shut down, or walk through the door Arsenal have been holding open for him?
