Arsenal spent the final days of the summer window in a holding pattern, hoping a World Cup winner would change his mind. He never did.
Julián Álvarez, one of the most coveted forwards in Europe, made it clear early: if he moved, it would be to Barcelona or nowhere. Arsenal tried to test that resolve right up until the deadline. It didn’t budge.
Arsenal’s late push goes nowhere
Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal hierarchy identified Álvarez as a major attacking target, a player they believed could stretch their ceiling in the Premier League and Europe. They kept the line open, waiting for the slightest hint that the Argentine might soften his stance on a Barcelona-only move.

Gerrard quietly delighted
Not everyone is disappointed.
Steven Gerrard, speaking about the saga, backed Atletico’s refusal to strengthen a direct rival and made no attempt to hide his relief that Álvarez did not end up in North London.
“I understand his point of view, but Atletico Madrid don't want to strengthen a rival and be a feeder club to the teams you can compete domestically with and in the Champions League, so you can understand it from a club point of view as well.
“I'm just glad he didn't go to Arsenal, I'll just leave that one there!”
The former Liverpool captain’s comments cut to the heart of the matter. Top clubs do not willingly arm their competitors, and rival figures do not want to see Arsenal add a forward of Álvarez’s calibre to an already imposing squad.
What next for Arsenal and Álvarez?
For now, nothing changes for the player. Álvarez stays at Atletico, continues his work in Madrid and waits. The Barcelona dream sits on the horizon, dependent on future negotiations, finances and Atletico’s willingness to eventually open that door.
Arsenal, meanwhile, must move on without a forward they had earmarked as a key piece of their project. They know exactly what they missed. The rest of the league does too.
The question now is simple: when Barcelona finally come calling again, will Atletico still be able to keep him out of their hands?
