Julian Alvarez Returns to Atletico Madrid Squad as Simeone Takes a Stand

Diego Simeone is bringing Julian Alvarez back into the fold – and he’s making it clear whose side he’s on.

The Atletico Madrid coach confirmed on Saturday that the Argentina striker will return to the squad for Sunday’s La Liga clash with Villarreal, after missing the opening win over Malaga.

"Yes, he's going to be included in the squad list tomorrow and he's doing better," Simeone told reporters. Alvarez has been working his way back to fitness after an extended post-World Cup holiday and was not involved in Wednesday’s victory.

The return comes against a tense backdrop. Alvarez pushed to leave Atletico in the summer, with both Barcelona and Real Madrid submitting bids. The club refused to sell. The fallout has been loud.

Atletico fans turned on him during the Malaga match, some directing insulting chants at the forward. The reaction is expected to continue on Sunday, with sections of the support ready to jeer a player they feel tried to walk away.

Simeone understands the mood in the stands but is drawing a line.

"Obviously, he's still getting up to speed, like all his teammates," he said, before addressing the hostility. "Obviously I don't share in any insults or slights. Let that be absolutely clear."

Then came the message that matters inside the dressing room.

"Julian is a hugely important player for achieving the goals we have as a team. We need him, we're going to look after him," Simeone insisted. "That's from a sporting standpoint, and we're going to stand by him. Why? Because he's our player, and as long as there are players at Atletico Madrid who are mine, I'm going to look after them."

While Atletico close ranks, Barcelona remain on the outside looking in. Asked repeatedly on Saturday whether the Spanish champions had finally abandoned their pursuit of Alvarez, Barca coach Hansi Flick refused to bite, saying only that he would not talk about players from other clubs.

So Alvarez walks back into a stadium that might boo his name, with two giants still lurking and a coach publicly wrapping an arm around his shoulder. How he responds now could shape Atletico’s season.
