Julian Alvarez’s Atletico Madrid Standoff Deepens

Julian Alvarez’s Atletico Madrid stand-off deepened on Friday as the Argentine missed first-team training for a third consecutive day, casting a heavy shadow over his immediate future in the Spanish capital.

The forward, desperate to engineer a move to Barcelona, remains away from Diego Simeone’s main group and, even if he does report back to the club’s facilities, he is expected to work alone, isolated from his team-mates. Barring a dramatic late twist, he will not feature in Atletico’s LaLiga trip to Sevilla on Saturday.

Inside the club, the message from the hierarchy is defiant. The desire to keep him is clear. The red line over Barcelona is even clearer.

“Our intention and my personal dream is for him to stay with us, to remain at Atletico,” chief executive Gil Marin said on Thursday, setting out the club’s stance in stark terms. “To compete amongst the greats, you need great players, and Julian is one. If he believes that staying at Atletico is no longer feasible, we will look for an alternative, but it will never, ever be Barcelona.”

That last sentence hangs over the entire saga. Alvarez wants Barça. Atletico refuse to strengthen a direct rival. The clock, meanwhile, keeps ticking.

With the transfer window closing on Tuesday night, the room for manoeuvre is shrinking fast. Arsenal have stepped into that space, working quietly in the background on a potential deal and, crucially, are viewed by Atletico as an acceptable destination if the price is right.

For now, though, the move is stuck in neutral. Alvarez has not yet given the go-ahead to Arsenal, and those close to the talks are still waiting for a signal from his camp that he is ready to change course and abandon his Barcelona dream.

Gil Marin painted a picture of a player caught in the middle of competing pressures.

“Julian is really struggling,” he said. “There have been people who have set out to deceive and confuse him, and I’m very sorry about that.

“I know him and we’ve been working with him for some time. He’s a great professional and footballer, but he’s very confused and going through a very difficult time, both personally and professionally.”

So Atletico train for Sevilla without one of their star forwards, Arsenal hover with a proposal they believe can unlock the situation, and Barcelona watch from the sidelines, the club Alvarez is pushing for but the one Atletico insist they will never sell to.

Something has to give before Tuesday night. The only question now is who blinks first.
