Joe Cole Backs Enzo Fernandez for Manchester City Midfield

Joe Cole has thrown his weight behind Manchester City’s pursuit of Enzo Fernandez, calling the Chelsea midfielder the “perfect” candidate to step into the void left by Rodri’s move to Barcelona – even if he believes it will ultimately take more than one player to truly replace the Spaniard.

Cole: “What a man to try and replace”

Rodri’s departure has ripped out the tactical core of Pep Guardiola’s side. For years he dictated City’s rhythm, screened the defence, and controlled entire games almost on his own. Finding anyone capable of taking on that responsibility is a nightmare scenario for any recruitment team.

Cole, speaking to Paddy Power, didn’t downplay the scale of the problem.

“What a man to try and replace,” he said. “Rodri is one of the all-time Premier League greats. Such a unique footballer.”

That’s the standard City are now chasing. And Cole is convinced Fernandez fits the brief.

The Argentine’s future has become one of the sagas of the window, with talk of a sensational switch to the Etihad growing louder. Cole believes the 23-year-old has exactly the technical profile and mentality to cope with the scrutiny and expectation that comes with anchoring City’s midfield.

He also expects the negotiations to be long and messy.

“This Enzo saga will definitely drag on, because what you’ve got is a player who wants to move on and is wanted by multiple clubs,” Cole said. “Both parties have put a marker down, so it seems to me it’s just about money now.”

“Manchester City tend to get their man”

City are scouring the market for midfield reinforcements, knowing they cannot afford to get this call wrong. Rodri was not just a holding midfielder; he was the system’s reference point. Take him out, and everything around him has to be recalibrated.

Cole pointed to City’s financial muscle and track record in big deals.

“Manchester City tend to find money from somewhere, don’t they?” he added. “Wherever they find it from, that’s down to the FA and everyone else to figure out!

“But they tend to get their man, and he’s a great player. I think he’s perfect for the job.”

Yet even as he talked up Fernandez, Cole underlined how enormous Rodri’s shadow remains. One signing, however talented, might not be enough.

Two players to fill one role?

Cole argued that City may have to spread Rodri’s responsibilities across more than one midfielder to recreate the same balance.

“Replacing Rodri, you need two players to do that,” he said. “Even two top quality players like [Elliot] Anderson and Fernandez.”

That line says everything about how he views Rodri’s influence: one of the Premier League’s greats, whose blend of tactical intelligence, physical presence and calm under pressure is almost impossible to replicate in a single footballer.

Cole still expects City to push the Fernandez deal over the line.

“I personally believe that deal will get done,” he said.

If he is right, the next question is simple: can Enzo Fernandez carry the weight of a midfield built in Rodri’s image, or will City really need two men to replace one?
