Joao Cancelo's Barcelona Return Gains Momentum
Joao Cancelo’s Barcelona return has taken a major step forward, with reports in Saudi Arabia claiming Al-Hilal are close to terminating his contract and clearing the way for a free transfer to Camp Nou.
The Portuguese full-back is currently tied to the Saudi Pro League club until 2027, and talks between Al-Hilal and Barcelona had centred on a permanent deal worth around €10-15 million. That figure always sat awkwardly against Barça’s tight financial constraints.
Now the picture looks very different.
Saudi sports daily Arriyadiyah, via reporter Hamad Al-Suwaih, reports that Al-Hilal are “nearing” an agreement to rip up Cancelo’s contract. If completed, it would allow the defender to join Barcelona without a transfer fee, a scenario that would dramatically simplify the operation for the Catalan club.
For Barcelona, it is exactly the kind of opening they have been waiting for. For Cancelo, it matches his stance from day one.
The 30-year-old has been unequivocal about his desire to stay in Spain after a successful second loan spell last season. He settled quickly, embraced the demands at Camp Nou and made no secret of his wish to continue in La Liga rather than return to Saudi Arabia.
That clarity now looks like it might be rewarded.
If Al-Hilal sign off on the termination, Barcelona would be poised to bring Cancelo back just in time to fold him into preparations for the new La Liga campaign.
